doping

The Moroccan Amine Laalou , who was scheduled for the second run, was refused entry to Great Britain because of a positive doping result at the beginning of August in connection with the Diamond League event in Monaco . He was then banned for two years.

Prelims

Three preliminary runs were carried out. The first six athletes per run qualified for the semifinals. In addition, the six fastest drivers, the so-called lucky losers , made it through. The directly qualified athletes are highlighted in light blue, the lucky losers in light green.

In the third run, Nixon Chepseba was admitted to the semifinals after a complaint by the judge's decision. 300 meters from the finish, the Kenyan stumbled in a promising position due to the US runner Centrowitz and fell back. The jury decided that Chepseba had been deprived of his semi-final chance due to a disability. Despite his unsportsmanlike conduct, Centrowitz was not disqualified.

final

August 7, 2012, 9:15 p.m.

All three Kenyans and two US runners qualified for the final. The final field was completed by one runner each from Algeria, Ethiopia, Bahrain, Morocco, New Zealand, Norway and Turkey.

Taoufik Makhloufi was threatened with a ban. The day before the 1500 meter final, he had canceled his 800 meter run . Officials of the IAAF initially assumed that the Algerian had wanted to spare himself for the 1500 meter final and excluded him from further competitions because of dishonorable behavior. The Algerian association appealed and justified Makhloufi's cancellation of the race with a knee injury, which was confirmed by doctors. Since the officials could no longer find a violation of ethics, they reversed their decision and allowed Makhloufi again for the 1,500 meter race.

The 2008 Olympic champion Asbel Kiprop suffered from an injury and crossed the finish line last. His compatriots Silas Kiplagat and Nixon Chepseba led the field up to about 300 meters from the finish. Makhloufi used his chance after his interim suspension and its withdrawal. He sprinted over the two Kenyans and won Olympic gold. The US American Leonel Manzano crossed the finish line in second place over half a second after him, ahead of the Moroccan Abdalaati Iguider. Kiplagat was seventh, Chepseba eleventh and penultimate.
