Orono is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 10,362 people lived there in 2,831 households on an area of 50.76 km².

Geographical location
Orono is located in the southeast of Penobscot County on the Penobscot River , which forms the eastern border of the town and flows south. The University of Maine campus is located on an island in the river . Adjacent to the northwest is Pushaw Lake . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
Orono was settled from 1774. The first settlers were Jeremiah Colburn and Joshua Ayers, who came from Massachusetts. Initially, the area was organized as a plantation under the name Stillwater . The name Orono goes back to a chief of the Penobscot who lived in this area. When the town was incorporated on March 12, 1806, it included the area that is now part of City Old Town. This became independent in 1840 and separated from Orono.
The University of Maine has its campus on an island in the Penobscot River. Initially founded as the State College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts , it offered early-stage courses in agriculture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, science, and literature. In 1897 it took its current name and is now known for teaching in the fields of food science, forestry (wood science), engineering, oceanography, pedagogy and economics. The number of students grew from 100 in 1880 to over 11,000 today.

Economy and Infrastructure

Interstate 95 and US Highway 2 run through Orono . Both run in a north-south direction and connect Orono with Portland and Bangor in the south and the Canadian border in the north.
