Perry (family name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Perry is an English family name .

The name "Perry" comes from England and denotes the origin of the name bearer. The name is derived from the old English word “pirige” or “pyrige” - the pear tree - and describes someone as the “keeper of the pear tree (s)”. The oldest mention of the name was in 1176 in the Pipe Roll for Staffordshire : "Henry de Peri"; furthermore in the Assize Roll for Somerset of 1243 a "William de la Purie" and a "Gilbert atte Perye" in the Feet of Fines for Surrey 1263. The name could, however, also come from the old French term "perrier" or "perrieur" for a quarry worker. The associated name was then usually "Perrier", which could have changed to "Perry" in English.

Today “Perry” refers to a perry cider, “Perrier” is a mineral water.
