The Slovenska Nogometna Liga , also called PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije because of a sponsorship agreement , is the highest Slovenian league in football .

history

From 1920 to 1991 the Slovenian league was the regional substructure in the Yugoslav league system. Since the country gained independence from Yugoslavia, the Slovenska Nogometna League has played the Slovenian national champions.

After the league operated under the name Liga Si.mobil Vodafone for years because of its main sponsor , it has been called PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije since the 2006/07 season , as the sponsor changed.

The mode has changed several times in the first few years. In the first season 1991/92 21 teams took part. In the second season the number of clubs was reduced to 18, from 1993/94 there were only 16 teams. Since the 1995/96 season only ten teams have taken part in the league competition. In 1998/99 there was an increase to twelve clubs, each club having three games against every other club, i. H. a total of 33 season games. In 2003/04 and 2004/05 there was a preliminary round in which each team competed against each other in a home and an away game. A championship round followed, in which the best six competed against each other twice. In 2005/06 the number was reduced to ten teams and the mode below was introduced.

Current mode

Ten teams are currently playing for the championship. Each team competes against every other team in two home and two away games. The first in the table after the 36 games played is the Slovenian champions . The table ninth plays two relegation games against the table runner-up in the second Slovenian league. The bottom of the table is automatically relegated and replaced by the champions of the second division.

As is now common in most leagues around the world, you get three points for a win and one point for a draw.
