The suspension railway station Zoo / Stadion is a station of the Wuppertal suspension railway in the Sonnborn district of the city of Wuppertal . The Wuppertal Zoo and the stadium at the zoo are located nearby . It is located between the suspension railway stations Sonnborner Straße (towards Vohwinkel) and Varresbecker Straße (towards Oberbarmen).
location
The Wuppertal Zoo was opened in 1881. A residential area, the Wuppertal Zoo District , was built east of the station from 1892 , and the stadium at the zoo in 1924. The Sonnborn railway bridge north of the stadium is the only structure that crosses the supporting structure of the suspension railway . In the wider area is the Wuppertal Zoologischer Garten station , but it does not offer a connection to the suspension railway.
Between the suspension railway station Sonnborner Straße and the zoo / stadium , the suspension railway line changes from the land to the river route.
History and architecture
The station used to be called “Zoologischer Garten”, but it was renamed “Zoo / Stadion” because of the stadium that was built later. The steel-and-glass construction was provided with extra-wide platforms due to the expected crowd at sporting events.
There used to be a turning loop south of the station. However, this was dismantled in 1951 as a spare parts dispenser, especially since turning around was only possible with individual wagons. In order to be able to offer a high frequency for events in the stadium, a new turning system in the form of a turntable with a subsequent siding was installed parallel to the main line at the location of the former turning loop. However, this construction was also prone to failure, so on July 28, 1992, a suspension railway jumped out of the tracks, and oil from the turntable ran into the Wupper. As a result, the turning loop was shut down and finally removed when the scaffolding was replaced in 2002.
In 2003 the new building of the station was opened.
