The Senate Giffey has formed the state government of Berlin since December 21, 2021 . In her first term as governing mayor, Franziska Giffey leads a red-green-red coalition of the SPD , Greens and Die Linke , which was formed as a result of the 2021 parliamentary elections . In the election for the governing mayor, 84 votes in favor and 52 against with two abstentions were cast.

The coalition agreement is entitled “Berlin, the capital of the future. Social. Ecologically. Diverse. Economic strong. ”And was published on November 29, 2021. On December 5, 2021, the Berlin SPD was the first of the three parties to vote in favor of the coalition agreement at a party congress with 91.5 percent of the delegate's votes. The Berlin Greens followed on December 12, 2021, approving the coalition agreement at a party congress with 96.4 percent of the delegate's votes. On December 17, 2021, Linke Berlin announced that by the end of the strike vote, 74.9 percent of those who voted had approved the contract.

After the coalition negotiations were concluded, the governing parties-designate gradually expressed their views on filling the respective senatorial posts. In addition to the governing mayoress Giffey (SPD), four senate members were nominated by the SPD, three by the Greens and also three by the Left. The left initially only presented its candidates individually. On December 1st it was announced that Katja Kipping would be the new Senator for Social Affairs, and on December 11th that Lena Kreck would be the Senator of Justice. The Greens presented their personal details together with Jarasch, Wesener and Gote on December 6th, the SPD their candidates Geisel, Spranger, Busse and Schwarz on December 20th.

State Secretaries

The state secretaries are the highest-ranking civil servants in the state of Berlin . They act as heads of office of the senate administrations, permanent representatives of the senators or - like the representative of the state of Berlin at the federal level - take on special tasks. The state secretaries were announced on December 19, 2021 by the Greens and December 20, 2021 by the SPD and Die Linke.
