Tommy Finke (full name: Thomas David Finke ; born February 4, 1981 in Bochum ), also active under the name TD Finck von Finckenstein , is a German singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in the genres of indie , alternative and pop as well as a composer for electronics Music / computer music , incidental music and film music . He is particularly known for his hymn-like songs and occasionally works as a writer and journalist. He is currently musical director at the Schauspiel Dortmund.
biography
Tommy Finke was born in Bochum in 1981. From 2003 to 2008 he studied at the Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media at the Folkwang University of the Arts in the subject Electronic composition as a student of Dirk Reith and closed on 3 July 2008 to study with the diploma examination. Since the 2015/2016 season he has been musical director at Schauspiel Dortmund.
music
Since 1997 Tommy Finke has performed regularly with self-written songs. Oasis , The Beatles , The Cure , Rio Reiser and The Police have a lasting influence on his songwriting, as do German-speaking bands such as Tocotronic and Die Sterne . In 1998 Tommy Finke and school friends founded the fun punk band Hummelgesicht, and in 1999 the band Stromgitarre, based on the Hamburg school . Since 2003 Tommy Finke has performed solo or as Tommy Finke & Band .
Also in 2003, Finke began studying at the Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media at the Folkwang University of the Arts in the subject Electronic composition as a student of Dirk Reith . In this context, Finke has worked with the Bochum video artist Martin Brand since 2003 . The works Bleach , Driver and Attack have been performed internationally several times. The connection of creative means from pop and serious music became a main focus. On July 3, 2008, Tommy Finke graduated with a diploma examination.
The collaboration with Ben Redelings resulted in two publications at the end of 2004: On the one hand, the soundtrack for the VfL Bochum documentary Who needs a champagne breakfast at Real Madrid? , which Tommy recorded completely at home using the 8-track analog process, and also the EP 1000 Miles . Both CDs were released by the Baukau Media label and distributed through Rough Trade .
In 2004 Tommy Finke played for the first time at Bochum Total , further appearances at Bochum's free festival followed in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2013. Through support gigs for Toni Kater , Tele , Lee Buddah and other indie bands, Tommy Finke became a household name the live scene.
In 2005 the piece Rock'n'Roll Leben was published on the sampler Zukunftsmusik by the radio station 1 Live .
On June 14th, 2007 the song was Repaired What Makes You Broke! and the associated B-side published digitally and offered for free download. On October 22, 2007, the album of the same name was released on vinyl, and on February 15, 2008, it was released as a download release and CD. The publication took place for the first time on the label Retter des Rock Records (LC-18543), which was founded for this purpose .
On August 28, 2009, Tommy Finke surprisingly announced in his blog that the next album Poet der Affen / Poet of the Apes will be released in spring 2010 due to a record deal with the traditional Bochum label ROOF Music . The recordings for the follow-up album to Repariert, What Makes You Broke! ran since October 2008.
Poet der Affen / Poet of the Apes was published on January 29, 2010 and contains all songs as a double album, one in German and one in English. This is so far unique for a singer-songwriter from Germany. In April 2010 Tommy Finke appeared on TV Noir and played some of his songs solo. At the end of July 2011 the piece Borderline Betty was published on the sampler Matuschke's favorites on the radio station Bayern 3 .
The current album Unkämmbar followed in 2013 . As singles, Canossa , Heimathafen , Who made me? and published at 17 in Hamburg .
A new album entitled A Heart for Anarchy was released on July 28, 2017.
Film music
After Tommy Finke had already composed occasional film scores for documentaries by Ben Redelings and other small film projects, he wrote and produced the entire music for Adolf Winkelmann's film adaptation of the novel Junge Licht in 2016 .

In 2013, Finke composed the music for the piece Das goldene Zeitalter - 100 Ways to Steal the Show from Fate under the direction of Kay Voges at the Theater Dortmund , which premiered on September 13, 2013. Music, video, acting, direction and dramaturgy form a single unit in the piece.
Finke also worked for Kay Voges on the music for the play 4.48 Psychosis by the playwright Sarah Kane . The pure music level is expanded here by body sensors that influence the music. The premiere took place on May 3, 2014 at Theater Dortmund . In autumn 2014 Finke composed the music for the dance piece Reverse_Me by choreographer Fabien Prioville at the Goethe-Institut in Montréal . The music was written on site and performed live. As dancers, both Fabien Prioville and Louise Lecavalier were part of the performative dance piece. At the end of 2014, the production of Endstation Sehnsucht at the Schauspiel Frankfurt , directed by Kay Voges, was musically developed by Tommy Finke. The premiere took place on December 6, 2014.
In June 2015, Kaspar Hauser and the Speechless from Devil County by Alexander Kerlin and Thorsten Bihegue premiered with music by Tommy Finke. The “main actor” of the piece is the Dortmund speaking choir, which has up to 80 members and shapes the piece. On August 23, 2015, The Show - A Millionaire Game for Life and Death by Kay Voges , Anne-Kathrin Schulz and Alexander Kerlin , directed by Kay Voges, premiered. Tommy Finke not only took over the musical direction of the piece, but also took to the stage with his band. On September 19, 2015, 2099 , the first play by the Center for Political Beauty , premiered in Dortmund with music / sound by Tommy Finke. Obsessed followed on October 23, 2015, directed by Jörg Buttgereit at Schauspiel Dortmund, with music by Finke.
Tommy Finke has been the musical director of Schauspiel Dortmund since the 2015/2016 season and is responsible for a large number of productions in terms of composition and performance.
The piece The Borderline Procession with Finke's music was invited to the 54th Berlin Theatertreffen in 2017 . An invitation to the 56th Berlin Theatertreffen for Das Internat mit Finkes Musik followed in 2019.
On July 13, 2018, Finke received the Dortmund Critics' Prize for her acting. WDR journalist Stefan Keim wrote in his laudation:
“Tommy Finke aka TD Finck von Finckenstein is far more than an accomplished all-round composer. If he is involved in a production, he becomes a formative co-creator. The gloomy soundtrack to Ersan Mondtag's visually stunning 'Boarding School', the electronic distortions and loops of Haydn's oratorio for Claudia Bauer's' Creation ', the wacky musical and punk songs for Kay Voges'' Theatermacher '- these are three outstanding works in just one season. A workhorse, a cheerful art anarchist, a creative bubbler. "
Savior of Rock Records
To his album Repariert, What Makes You Broke! Tommy Finke founded the label Retter des Rock Records in 2007 . In cooperation with the distributor Rough Trade , albums by Tommy Finkes himself, as well as u. a. by Fabian und das Stromorchester ( Unter Strom ), Trapped Inside the Chase (self-titled), Spaceman Spiff ( Bodenangst ), Captain's Diary , ( Never right for everyone and Illusion as ammunition ), Edy Edwards ( 1989 ) and Stefan Bauer ( Seven faces of the Fear ) appeared.
Trivia
The American skeptic James Randi speaks a few lines on the song Poet der Affen / Poet of the Apes on the album of the same name . These were recorded especially for the album.
The song title Bier and Loathing in Las Vegas refers to the book / movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . The song repairs what breaks you! refers to the song Macht kaputt what breaks you! of the Politrock group Ton Steine Shards .
In 2001, actor Uwe Rohde sang Tommy's song Bier and Loathing with electric guitar in Las Vegas for the soundtrack of the film Lemmingsfrühling . In 2006 Tommy Finke sang a few lines on the EP Football Songs by the band Helter Skelter on the track Football Songs (Bad Cover Version) . In addition to the musicians from Helter Skelter, Andre Haggeney, Daniel Roth (from Dorfdisko ), Jan Schüler, Lorenz Theuer and DJ Psycho Jones could be heard as singers on this song.
The first electric guitar appearance was on the 20th anniversary of John Lennon's death (December 8, 2000). Drummer "König Rollo" disappeared in 2003 in a mysterious way.
In March 2010, Tommy Finke spoke up in the forum himself in response to a request for an (illegal) download option for his album Poet der Affen and, as an artist, took a critical position on it. He described the difficult situation in his view of being able to earn money with music as a relatively unknown artist.
In the book Sommerfest by Bochum-based author Frank Goosen , Tommy Finkes appearance on the A40 motorway as part of the Still-Leben Ruhrschnellweg for the RUHR.2010 Capital of Culture project is described.
