history

Đà Nẵng lay in the catchment area of the old Cham empire in central Vietnam.

Colonial times

In 1847, French warships bombed the city, ostensibly due to the alleged persecution of Catholic missionaries. During the Cochinchina Campaign in 1858, French troops of the Second Empire occupied the city with Spanish support, but were forced to retreat by Vietnamese troops in 1860. Since the French had already conquered Saigon and other areas in southern Vietnam, they were able to secure rule over three southern provinces in the Treaty of Saigon in 1862 . In the period that followed, the French expanded their possessions and Đà Nẵng also came under their rule as part of the Annam protectorate .

Vietnam War

During the Vietnam War , Đà Nẵng served as an important naval base for the US armed forces. During that time, Da Nang developed into one of the largest cities in South Vietnam.

At the beginning of the Vietnam War , the first US combat troops landed on China Beach south of Da Nang in Vietnam in 1965 . From 1967 to 1972, Đà Nẵng was also the anchorage of the hospital shipHelgoland ”, a converted seaside resort ship of the German shipping company HADAG , from which the German Red Cross chartered it. Doctors, nurses and nursing staff from the Malteser Relief Service provided humanitarian aid to civilian victims of the Vietnam War in Da Nang. Five Maltese volunteers were kidnapped by a Viet Cong unit. Two were later released and the other three were killed.

Shortly before the Tet offensive , the North Vietnamese began to besiege the fortress of Khe Sanh on January 21, 1968 ( Battle of Khe Sanh ). A relief by the US 1st Cavalry Division was not until April 6, 1968. The approximately 6,000 beleaguered Marines had an air bridge to be supplied. The Đà Nẵng Air Base was the northernmost air base in South Vietnam and was therefore of great importance for the supply flights.

On March 30, 1975, the city was captured by communist troops during the Vietnam War .

climate

Da Nang has a tropical monsoon climate with two seasons: a long rainy season from May to January and a short dry season from February to April. economy

Some of Central Vietnam's agricultural products, such as rice, dried fish, tea and fish sauce, are exported via the port. With the completion of the transport corridor from Đà Nẵng via Laos to Mukdahan in northeast Thailand , imports and exports from Thailand, especially the neighboring country Laos, will also be handled via Đà Nẵng. The completion of an oil refinery has also increased the city's economic importance. Since the lifting of the US trade embargo in 1994, companies from South Korea and Japan have settled in Da Nang.

The German retail group Metro has opened a branch in Da Nang (the third next to Hanoi and Saigon).

The Cham Museum with outstanding exhibits of the Cham culture and the caves of the Marble Mountains south of the city on the way to Hội An are of touristic importance . The port of Da Nang is regularly called by cruise ships from Japan and the USA. In 1997 the luxury hotel "Furama" was opened in Da Nang.

Da Nang International Airport , Vietnam's third largest airport, is located in the city .
