history
The ancient predecessor settlement of today's Trevi was called Trebiae . Originally settled by the Umbrians , in Roman times the city was a municipality of the Italian Regio VI; the core of the settlement shifted from the hill to the plain to the Via Flaminia. Remains of the ancient city wall have been preserved. At the Clitumnus about four kilometers below the city was a nationally known sanctuary of Jupiter .
From late antiquity to the 11th century, Trebiae / Trevi was the seat of a bishop. The titular diocese of Trebia of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the diocese . In the Middle Ages Trevi initially was part of Lombardy, became autonomous in the 13th century and in 1438 part of the Papal States .
