The US Highway 50 (short US 50 ) is a United States highway in the United States . It begins in West Sacramento on Interstate 80 in the state of California and ends after 4,846 kilometers in Ocean City on Maryland Route 528 .
When the highway opened in 1926, there were two separate sections. The western part connected Sacramento with Ely in Nevada and the section in the east ran from Thistle in Utah to Annapolis south of Baltimore in the state of Maryland. The sections were not connected until 1928. The endpoints of the US 50 in Ocean City and West Sacramento have not been changed since 1978.
In Nevada, the US 50 is called The Loneliest Road in America . This designation was given in 1986 by Life magazine due to the sparse population along the road and was later used for marketing purposes.
