Urban Kreutzbach (born August 28, 1796 in Copenhagen , † August 22, 1868 in Borna ) was an organ builder who worked in central Germany .

education

Urban Kreutzbach first completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Helsingør . During his years of wandering through France , Switzerland and Germany he came to Pegau in 1821 to the master organ builder Carl Gottlob Häcker. There he worked on the building of the organs in Schönau and Prießnitz near Frohburg . In 1822, Urban Kreutzbach went to Borna with Häcker , who relocated his workshop there. Kreutzbach obtained his master craftsman's certificate in Borna .

Own workshop

In 1828 Urban Kreutzbach started his own business in Borna. He built his first organ for the church in Dittmannsdorf , his last for the town church in Borna, but he did not witness its inauguration in 1869. His journeymen also included the later world-famous organ builder Friedrich Ladegast and his brother Christlieb, who worked on Kreutzbach's first major organ work for the St. Nikolai town church in Waldheim in 1842 . In addition to building new organs, Kreutzbach also carried out restoration work, B. at the Silbermann organ in Rötha and the Hildebrandt organ in Störmthal . In addition, he continued to work as a carpenter and, for example, carried out the carpentry work for the boys' school (today's city library) in Borna in 1829 .

Succession

After Urban Kreutzbach's death, his two sons Richard (1839–1903) and Bernhard took over the company. However, Bernhard quickly withdrew from the company after a dispute.

Until his death in 1903, Richard built other excellent organs in the tradition of his father.

Two former employees of Richard Kreutzbach - Wilhelm Schmidt (1867–1945) and Wilhelm Berger (1863–1929) - continued the business under the name Schmidt & Berger (Kreutzbach Nachf.) . From 1910 only "organ repairs and tuning" were carried out. After the First World War, the company was dissolved.

The third brother Julius Kreutzbach (1845–1913) became a well-known piano manufacturer in Leipzig.
