Honeycomb is a French municipality with 431 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France in northern France. It belongs to the arrondissement of Montreuil and the canton of Berck .

geography

Honeycomb is located at an average height of 27 meters above sea ​​level , 103 kilometers southwest of Lille , the capital of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, and 5 kilometers southeast of the canton capital Berck . The hamlet of La Madelon is located at the mouth of the Authie in the English Channel on the south-western edge of the municipality.

history

Artifacts from the 5th and 6th centuries have been discovered in honeycombs . This includes a fibula , a belt buckle and various glass vessels.

In the Middle Ages , Waben was an important trading and fishing port . However, over the centuries it silted up. Today it is used as a leisure harbor.

In 1793, during the French Revolution (1789–1799) , Waben received the status of a municipality and became the capital of a canton . In 1801, the municipality received the right to local self-government through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) and was incorporated into the canton of Montreuil . It was not until 1991 that it was allocated to the then newly formed canton of Berck.

Culture and sights

The fishing boat la Marianne Toute Seule is the reconstruction of a special historical type of Norman fishing boat called the Cordier . It was built in 1992 for the city of Berck and won a coastal boat competition in Brest in the same year . The boat is 5.7 meters long, 2.7 meters high and has three sails with a total of around 40 square meters. From May to August the ship is available for tourist, cultural and educational excursions, 8 people can take part in each.

In the Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité there is a baptismal font from the 16th century, which was classified as Monument historique ('historical monument') in 1908 .
