Varvažov (German Warwaschau ) is a municipality with 170 inhabitants in the Czech Republic . It is located 16 km west of the town of Milevsko ( Mühlhausen ) and belongs to the Okres Písek in Jihočeský kraj .
geography
Varvažov is on the left side of the Skalice . The confluence of the Otava and Moldau rivers, which has become part of the elongated reservoir of the Orlík dam , which damms both rivers here, is located in the east of the municipality near the district of Zbonín . Most of the 295 houses in the community are not permanently inhabited, but are used as holiday homes.
Zvíkov Castle is located on the right bank of the Otava in the neighboring village of Zvíkovské Podhradí .
history
Varvažov was founded in the 13th century by the Order of Malta from Klingenberg Castle . The Maltese maintained a courtyard with a castle in the village. The place name is derived after Antonín Profous from the medieval German name Arbesau. The Arbese is to be translated here with the field crop pea , in the sense of pea. The place name Varvažov (Warwaschau) developed from this. In 1734 a chapel was built. In 1847, Prince Charles II of Schwarzenberg bought the Warwaschau rulership for 650,000 guilders from the Order of St. John and added it to his Fideikommissherrschaft Worlik . In 1925 a local history was created.
