Wayne Jones (born December 24, 1959 ) is a former Welsh snooker player who was on the professional tour between 1984 and 2001. During this time he reached the final of the world ranking tournament Classic 1989 ; previously he had become, among other things, Welsh amateur champions .

Career

Jones', who was born on Christmas Eve 1959, began his amateur career when he was knocked out by Paul Ennis in the 1981 Southern Eliminatory competition of the English Professional Championship after defeating Dave Chalmers . As early as the mid-1970s, he had participated in various junior tournaments and won the British U16 championship in 1976 and the Welsh U21 championship in 1980. In 1982 Jones reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Snooker Championship and lost to Mario Berni , before he survived both the group stage and the quarter-finals at the World Amateur Championship of the same year and lost in the semi-finals to his compatriot Terry Parsons . On Parsons Wilson met in the final of the Welsh Championship a year later, but Wilson managed to win the title with an 8: 4 victory. A year later he had to admit defeat Parsons 7: 8 final, but he reached the final of the English Professional Championship, but there he lost too - this time 8:13 against Steve Longworth . He then became a professional player for the 1984/85 season.

First professional years

Wilson started his first professional season with an entry into the round of 32 of the International Open , in which after three wins against David Taylor lost. He then only reached the second round for him twice and lost his opening game once, but he made up for this by participating in the round of 32 of the British Open . Finally he ended the season with victories over John Rea , John Dunning , Mike Watterson and Graham Miles , so that he surprisingly reached the main round of the Snooker World Championship , where he was directly defeated by Jimmy White . At the end of the season he still took part in the Welsh Professional Championship , but where he lost his opening game against Steve Newbury . However, since this tournament was an invitation-only tournament and therefore had no influence on its world ranking, it was placed in 49th world ranking in the following season.

In the following season Jones was able to reach the round of the last 64 in world ranking tournaments, for example in the UK Championship and in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship . Exceptions to this were a first round defeat at the Classic against Jimmy van Rensberg and a move into the round of the last 32 of the Grand Prix , so that he was led in the following season on the 56th place in the world rankings and thus lost seven places. Apart from that, he won the Welsh Professional Championship over Clive Everton and Ray Reardon , before losing 7: 9 to Doug Mountjoy in the semifinals .

The 1986/87 season went, unlike the previous season much better: In addition to a Erstrundenaus at the British Open and two second-round defeats at the International Open against Ray Reardon and qualifying for the World Snooker Championship to compatriot Mark Bennett he pulled the Grand Prix in the round of the last 32 and reached the last sixteen at the Classic , where he won in the previous rounds, among other things, a victory over the world champion of 1985, Dennis Taylor . However, this was overshadowed by a quarter-final participation in the UK Championship , where he had previously defeated a total of four players - including Eugene Hughes and Taylor - and had to admit defeat first to Alex Higgins . Outside the ranking tournaments, he also reached the quarterfinals of the Welsh Professional Championship and was subject to Terry Griffiths , but this had no impact on the world rankings. On this he was placed in 34th place in the following season, which means he barely missed the top 32 and the associated direct qualification for the main round of the world rankings tournament.

Promotion to 22nd place

In the 1987/88 season Jones did not reach the last sixteen or a higher round of a ranking tournament, but he was able to reach the round of 32 twice in addition to an opening defeat and three defeats in a round of the last 64; first at the International Open and the second time surprisingly at the Snooker World Championship , so that he had reached the World Cup main round for the second time, but where he was eliminated again directly. Far from the ranking tournaments, Jones managed to get into the final of the Welsh Professional Championship with the help of wins over Ray Reardon and Doug Mountjoy , where he lost to Terry Griffiths 3: 9. In terms of the world rankings, Jones managed to maintain his 34th place and thus again miss the top 32.

The next season was Jones's best season to date, even though he lost a total of three opening games - but only one of them in a ranked tournament - and four times in the round of 64. He also managed to get into the round of 32 at the Grand Prix and at the World Snooker Championship a participation in the round of 16, but Jones had previously with a participation in the final of the Classics , which he had lost 11:13 to Doug Mountjoy for taken care of his career high point. Through this he was led in the following season on the 31st place in the world rankings, whereby he was placed directly in the main round for the vast majority of world ranking tournaments - with the exception of the snooker world championship.

During the 1989/90 season Jones lost two more opening games, but he reached a total of six times a round of the last 32, including the UK Championship and the World Snooker Championship . In addition, he was able to show a round of 16 participation in the Asian Open and a quarter-final participation in the Classic , in addition there was a semi-final participation without any influence on the world rankings at the Welsh Professional Championship . As a result of these results, he was listed in the following season on the 22nd place in the world rankings, which was the best world rankings of his career.

In the top 32 for recent years

The 1990/91 season , however, was much worse than the previous seasons: Jones lost a total of five opening games, which he missed, among other things, the main round of the Snooker World Championship , he also lost once in a round of the last 64 and three times in a round the last 32. The only bright spots were participation in the round of 16 of the UK Championship and the Classics as well as a semi-final participation in the Welsh Professional Championship , but the latter had no influence on the world rankings. On this Jones lost a total of three places, so that he was led in the following season in 25th place.

Also in the next season Jones lost a total of five opening games, which he again missed the main round of the snooker world championship, in world ranking tournaments he also did not get beyond the round of 32, which he reached a total of five times; only in the Benson and Hedges Satellite Championship , a non-ranking tournament, he made it to the round of 16. On the world rankings, Jones finally slipped out of the top 32 and was now 34th.

Leaving at place 57

In the 1992/93 season , the number of Jones' opening defeats rose to six, in addition he reached four rounds of the last 64 and the round of 32 both at the Dubai Classic and the third Strachan Challenge event , the latter being a so-called tournament Minor ranking tournament, which only offered a limited number of world ranking points. Again he drove his best result at the Benson and Hedges Championship when he reached the round of 16 with the help of a victory over the eventual world champion Ken Doherty and was eliminated by Alain Robidoux . However, this had no impact on the world rankings, on which ranked 43rd in the following season.

During the following season , Jones again lost numerous opening games, this time the number was based on five lost games. All other six opening games Jones could win, but he always lost in the subsequent round, so his best result was the round of the last 64. This was not too noticeable on the world rankings, however, as he finished 52nd in the following season despite the persistent doldrums and thus only lost nine places.

With the 1994/95 season , Jones' situation improved again when he only lost four opening games and four times reached the round of 64 and at the British Open even the round of 32, in which Peter Ebdon had to admit defeat . Jones lost most of the season against talented young players like Alan McManus , Anthony Hamilton or Peter Ebdon; He lost only three games against former top players from the 1980s, which were Tony Meo , Dennis Taylor and Cliff Thorburn . In the world rankings he still lost five places, so that he finished 57th in the following.

Brief improvement and subsequent continuation of the downward trend

The upward trend continued into the 1995/96 season, although Jones suffered five opening defeats and lost two more times in the round of 64. However, he did significantly better in the other tournaments: He reached the round of 16 at the UK Championship with victories over, among others, Dean Reynolds and Paul Hunter , the round of 32 at the Welsh Open and the International Open and the German Open the round of the last 48. These results enabled Jones to improve on the world rankings for the first time in six years; the following season he finished 48th.

With the following season , however, came the big slump: Again Jones lost five opening games, but he could only win one game in his other five tournament appearances, so he did not make it through the round of 64. This resulted in a loss of ten places on the world rankings, which made him 58th in the following season.

The definitive beginning of the end of Jones' professional career began with the 1997/98 season , when he could only win three opening games in nine tournaments and always lost in the subsequent round of 64 in these tournaments - Grand Prix , UK Championship and Welsh Open . On the world rankings this was clearly noticeable with a fall to 82nd place.

Last professional years

In the 1998/99 season Jones was able to win only three opening games in ten tournaments and also failed again in the next round, which was the case at the UK Championship , the Irish Open and the Welsh Open . On the world rankings, he slipped out of the top 100 and finished 104th the following season.

The following season went a little better for Jones when he only lost three opening games and won a total of seven times. However, he lost in six cases immediately afterwards, only at the Grand Prix he managed another victory before he was eliminated there. On the world rankings he was able to improve by three places to 101st.

In the 2000/01 season Jones was able to win a total of three opening games, where he was eliminated from the UK Championship and the Welsh Open and won the subsequent game at the Benson and Hedges Championship without a fight and then lost to Michael Holt . He lost all other opening games, including the opening game in the World Cup qualifying 6:10 against Darryn Walker. This game was Jones' last professional game: Due to the lull in victory, he fell to 143rd place and since the number of professionals was severely limited at the end of this season, Jones lost his professional place after 17 seasons.

Another amateur career

After leaving the professional tour, Jones tried to re-qualify via the Challenge Tour , but he reached the second round three times and was only able to advance once when he reached the quarterfinals in the second event and lost to Stefan Mazrocis . Furthermore, he was able to participate as an amateur in the World Cup qualification , where he was eliminated after winning the opening game. In the next year he again took part in the events of the Challenge Tour, where he lost two opening games without a fight and in the two other events reached the round of 16 and the semi-finals and lost there.

It took a few years before Jones appeared again: In 2011 and 2012 Jones took part in the qualification for the Senior World Cup, but he lost his opening games both times. In the 2013 edition , Jones finally managed to move into the final qualifying round, but lost after a total of three wins there against Dave Harold .
