The socialist World Federation of Democratic Youth ( WBDJ ) was founded on November 10, 1945 at the World Youth Conference in London . It is recognized by the United Nations as an international non-governmental youth organization.
The WBDJ has over 150 member organizations (more than 270 according to its own information in 2012) from 109 countries, representing around 30 million young people. These youth organizations are communist or socialist oriented and / or they belong to liberation movements .
The WBDJ is the main sponsor of the World Festival of Youth and Students, which has been taking place at irregular intervals since 1947 .
The WBDJ was a communist front organization . As a result of the collapse of the socialist camp , the WBDJ fell into a serious crisis in 1990/91. The future character of the association was called into question. However, the WBDJ survived this crisis and restored its regular working methods. In 1997 the world festival was held in Cuba for the first time . The highest organ of the WBDJ is the General Assembly (until 1957 World Congress), which last took place in 2019 in Nicosia . With 160 representatives from 93 organizations, this was the largest general assembly in the last 30 years.
Member organizations
The representatives of Germany in the WBDJ are the Socialist German Workers' Youth (SDAJ) and the Free German Youth (FDJ). The Austrian representative is the Communist Youth of Austria (KJÖ). The Communist Youth of the Swiss Labor Party resigned in the early 1990s. After its re-establishment in 2017, it sought to re-join the WBDJ, which was accepted at the 20th General Assembly in December 2019.
