As part of the formerly independent municipality of Ihmert, Westendorf has been part of the town of Hemer in North Rhine-Westphalia since January 1, 1975 . The settlement is located west of Ihmert on the L 888, which connects Kesbern with Ihmert.

The first settlement of Westendorf is documented around 1500, making the settlement one of the oldest districts of Ihmert. At that time a farm was built in Westendorf. The first written mention of Westendorf goes back to the year 1563 as an estate . The settlement had a total of 25 inhabitants in 1730 and 41 in 1885.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Westendorf, like the entire Ihmert Valley, was shaped by the wire industry. There were no wire-drawing shops in the village, but some wire-drawing workers lived there.
