The Windows Vista operating system (in Romance languages for “view, view”, originally from the Latin videre , “see”) was released by Microsoft on January 30, 2007 and is the successor to Windows XP and the predecessor of Windows 7 . Support was discontinued by Microsoft on April 11, 2017.

Development history

Windows Vista was developed as the successor to Windows XP with the version number NT 6.0 . It was the first Microsoft operating system to be produced entirely according to Microsoft's Security Development Lifecycle . For the first time Windows Longhorn (the internal working name of Windows Vista), announced even before the release of Windows XP, Microsoft in summer 2,001th At that time it was intended as an intermediate step between XP and the version but one (then Blackcomb ) and should be released at the end of 2003. However, this continued to be delayed, so that development work on the version for companies was completed on November 8, 2006, while development of the version for private users continued for a few weeks. Windows Vista became available in November 2006 for companies and developers and on January 30, 2007 for private customers.

Due to the delays, Microsoft also had Shorthorn in the short term , an intermediate version between Windows XP and Longhorn. This intermediate version was then discarded in order to complete Longhorn more quickly. Some Shorthorn features have been integrated into Service Pack 2 for Windows XP and others into Vista.

One of the reasons for the delays is many features that were originally planned for Blackcomb , but have already been implemented in Vista. On the other hand, functions and innovations that were initially intended were no longer available, so the associative file management system WinFS , which was actually planned for Vista, was only postponed to a point in time after the release of Vista in order, according to Microsoft, to complete the development of Vista in a “reasonable period of time”, but later entirely given up. It was also originally planned to introduce a trusted computing environment under the name Next-Generation Secure Computing Base in Windows Vista . However, as a result of development problems and massive protests, this plan was rejected again.

From August 30, 2005, Microsoft published monthly "Community Technical Previews" for MSDN subscribers and selected beta testers, which were replaced on June 8, 2006 by a public beta test , called the "Customer Preview Program", in which a download of development version 2 from Windows Vista was possible. On July 1, 2006, the download option was discontinued because, according to Microsoft, the number of "testers" (= registrations) was large enough. The first Windows Vista Release Candidate (RC1) was also publicly available from September 6, 2006. In particular, there were innovations in the area of security, and errors were also corrected. "Release Candidate 2" (RC2, Build 5744) followed on October 7, 2006 as the last public version.

Other versions were mainly tested internally. Build 5808, which was distributed to some testers on October 22, 2006, is particularly well known. The version jump could be explained by the addition of the last unpublished functions (system sounds, start logo, etc.).

The final version for companies was created on November 8, 2006. Like the version for private customers, it has the build number 6000.

According to an estimate by the American business magazine BusinessWeek , Microsoft had around 10,000 employees for the project for five years and invested around 10 billion US dollars in the development. Microsoft itself puts the cost of the development at 6 billion dollars.

The Washington Post reported in 2007 that Microsoft - similar to Apple in the development of Mac OS X - has worked with numerous US authorities, including the NSA , and international institutions that are major Microsoft customers in testing and developing the new operating system wanted to participate.

Editions

Windows Vista was available in six different editions, which differed in terms of product scope and price: as a Starter Edition (only for emerging countries), Home Basic (for growth markets and netbooks), Home Premium (including Media Center - intended for the broad market), and Business (designed for medium and small companies), Enterprise (volume licenses for business customers) and as Ultimate (combines all functions of the other versions, except starters).

All versions are on the same DVD and the installation routine uses the product key to identify which version should be installed.

Edition description Safety crit.
Updates to
Windows Vista Starter Similar to the Windows XP Starter Edition , this version is severely restricted. Vista Starter is primarily designed for developing countries and is intended to prevent illegal copies. As with the predecessor, it is only possible to start three programs at the same time; it is also the only version that only includes 32-bit support. April 11, 2017
Windows Vista Home Basic Vista Home Basic is a slimmed-down version for home use. The extended graphics mode Aero Glass is not part of the functionality of the Home Basic version. It offers basic functions and is not intended for extended multimedia use. April 11, 2017
Windows Vista Home Premium This enhanced version of Vista Home Basic is designed for the home market. It has some additional features such as HDTV support and DVD writing . Microsoft also advises that the Premium Edition can use an Xbox 360 as a Windows XP Media Center Edition extender. This version is therefore comparable to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 , but it lacks the ability to join a domain, for example. April 11, 2017
Windows Vista Business Similar to Windows XP Professional , this version is aimed at the corporate sector. It supports Windows Server Domains and is equipped with a new version of the IIS web server . April 11, 2017
Windows Vista Enterprise This version, based on Vista Business , is primarily intended for large customers and also offers, among other things, BitLocker hard disk encryption , the Virtual PC Express PC emulator and a subsystem with which Unix programs (unchanged) run under Vista. This version is sold to major customers in a so-called volume license. In contrast to Windows XP, Vistas volume licenses must also be activated. In order to reduce the administration effort, Microsoft provides its own activation server for company networks. April 11, 2017
Windows Vista Ultimate Vista Ultimate combines the functions of the other versions and, according to Microsoft, is aimed at small business owners who use their PC for private and business purposes, as well as private users who operate their computer both at home and in the company network. This expansion stage enables the user to freely change the system language. This is also possible afterwards, i.e. after the "upgrade" to this version. April 11, 2017

The mainstream support ended on April 10, 2012. Originally, only for corporate use imaginary business and enterprise versions of the then following extended support obtained in which Microsoft continues to security updates. However, on February 20, 2012, Microsoft announced that all Windows Vista versions would receive this extended support until April 11, 2017.

With the exception of Windows Vista Starter (formerly “Windows Starter 2007”), all versions are available in a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. In contrast to Windows XP x64, which only had a rudimentary 64-bit version as an interim solution, Windows Vista has improved AMD64 support.

In the case of versions for the European market, Microsoft distinguishes between the “normal edition” and the “N edition” (as with Windows XP). The EU competition commission had prescribed Microsoft not to bundle the operating system with Windows Media Player in order not to disadvantage competitors in the multimedia sector.

Innovations

The Aero

The most popular new feature in Vista is Aero , the new vector-based user interface for Windows. The name is derived from the Greek term for “air” and is intended to be a backronym for “authentic, energetic, reflexive, open”. In the so-called Aero-Glass mode, the user interface offers the user application windows with shadows, semi-transparent frames and fluid animations when minimizing, restoring, closing and opening. This surface is included from the Home Premium Edition. In order to be able to use the functions optimally, a so-called " WDDM " (Windows Display Driver Model) driver must be installed for the corresponding hardware. The mouse pointer has also been changed: In the case of background activity or load, an animated "ring" is now displayed (instead of the hourglass). The pointer became a little shorter in general.

With Flip 3D you can switch between multiple windows in a 3D view in Windows Vista. This can be called up via the taskbar or with Windows logo 2002+2006 simplified black.svg+ .

Integration of a sidebar

Microsoft's gadgets are new . These are small, specialized service applications that can be integrated in a sidebar on the desktop and, for example, display information about news, the weather and the like. The sidebar is activated by default. In the Vista successor, Windows 7, the function was retained slightly changed. The sidebar has been deactivated, but the mini-applications (gadgets) can be individually placed anywhere on the desktop using the control panel. Later (2012) Microsoft announced a departure from this concept for security reasons and recommended the complete deactivation of the sidebar and gadgets.

Windows contacts

The Address Book program known from XP has been revised and renamed "Windows Contacts".

Windows Mail

Windows Mail

The e-mail program Windows Mail is used as the successor to Outlook Express and replaces it. Windows Mail contains an integrated spam filter, which can filter out spam messages independently without presetting and is updated monthly via Microsoft Update.

Windows calendar

Windows Vista introduced a program called Windows Calendar. With this one can create several calendars and enter them into these dates.

Snipping tool

Snipping Tool , which was first shipped with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, allows you to take screenshots with a graphical user interface. It is now also possible to record individual screen areas, the entire screen or a window. Snipping Tool is available for Windows Vista Home Premium , Business , Enterprise and Ultimate editions ; it is not sold with Windows Vista Starter and Home Basic .

Windows Photo Gallery

The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer , which was introduced with Windows XP, was renamed Windows Photo Gallery with Windows Vista . (It has been called Windows Photo Viewer since Windows 7. ) The program has been revised and adapted to the Aero interface, and it also offers a few more functions for editing or improving the display of images.

Windows Live Messenger Download

Windows Messenger published in Windows XP was renamed Windows Live Messenger in Vista. This was also removed from Windows. It must be installed with the Windows Essentials software package (formerly Windows Live Dashboard and Windows Live Essentials). The package is available free of charge from the Microsoft website. The link "Windows Live Messenger Download" now redirects to the Skype website because the messenger service has been discontinued.

Revision of the search function

The search has been completely revised, so search results are displayed while the search is running. The Windows Vista search allows you to add several filters in order to continuously refine the search (for example “file contains the word 'example'”), but only afterwards. In Windows Vista, a search field is also built into the start menu, which is used to start applications faster and to make it easier to find documents and e-mails. Search queries can be saved , like the smart folders under macOS , and then function as virtual folders by automatically executing the corresponding search query when such a folder is opened and the results are displayed as a normal folder. Vista Search is based on an extended and improved version of the indexing service for Windows XP Search. With Windows Vista Service Pack 1, the Search button has been removed from the Start menu because it has been replaced by the search field.

Control functions for parents

Parents can determine when, how long and with which programs their children can use the computer. It is also possible to restrict Internet access. Finally, the new function also includes the ability to monitor the use of the computer. The Windows Live Family Safety software enables further restrictions and is included in the Windows Essentials package (formerly Windows Live Essentials and Windows Live Dashboard). This software package can be downloaded free of charge from the Microsoft website.

safety

With Windows Vista an extended user account control was introduced, which should make it easier to work with different user rights in order to increase security. After installing the operating system, the user now works with restricted user rights by default. As soon as an application requires administrative rights to run, a dialog box is displayed which must be confirmed separately so that this application can be run with administrator rights.

Vista also contains new security measures to make it more difficult to exploit vulnerabilities in the operating system or application programs . Above all, this includes address scrambling (ASLR) . The Structured Exception Handler Overwrite Protection (SEHOP) was introduced with the 1st Service Pack, but it is deactivated by default.

Storage management

The ReadyBoost and SuperFetch functions are intended to accelerate the start of the operating system and programs. In addition, the NTFS file system has been updated to support atomic operations at the file system level, among other things. Vista supports reading and writing of DVD-RAM via drag and drop (→  Universal Disk Format ) and can integrate WebDAV folders in Explorer (the former is only possible with additional software under Windows XP).

Technical changes

Vista is delivered with a new version of the DirectX graphic interface in version 10. This API enables faster execution of the graphics functions and is characterized by a slight expansion of the effects palette.

The Internet Explorer , now called "Windows Internet Explorer" is available in version 7.0. Other new applications are the games Chess-Gianten , Mahjongg-Gianten and Lila Land , the backup program Windows Backup (replaces the old NTBackup), Windows Calendar (with WebDAV support), Notes, "Windows Teamwork" (collaboration) and Windows Defender ( Protection against spyware).

In addition, with .NET Framework 3.0 there is a new, .NET- based programming interface for Windows, which is intended to give application programmers access to the new functions of Windows Vista. The core of .NET Framework 3.0 is made up of the four components Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) and Windows CardSpace . In addition, Vista uses the newly created CNG for cryptographic tasks.

  • Mobility center: Vista enables special additional functions on mobile devices, for example for a simplified connection of a projector during a presentation. These functions are summarized in the "Vista Mobility Center" and can be called up (with Vista notebooks) with the key combination Win + X.
  • Windows Rally : This is a group of network protocols used to simplify the configuration, diagnosis and maintenance of networked computers, routers and other network components. For example, the Vista “Network Map” iscreated usingthe Link-Layer-Topology-Discovery- Protocol.

The support for DirectSound 3D hardware acceleration has been removed, a software emulation is used as a replacement, in which the sound effects are mixed or generated by the CPU. Computer programs that use DirectSound 3D, such as B. games, can therefore no longer directly access the audio hardware and use advanced 3D effects of the hardware (such as EAX ). DirectSound 3D as such and DirectSound -3D sound effects are still supported. In addition, 3D acceleration is still possible through the free OpenAL interface.

Microsoft's device-independent document format based on XML is integrated under the name XML Paper Specification (XPS, formerly "Metro") . It is similar in many ways to Adobe Inc. ' PDF . XPS is designed to allow users to view, print, and archive files without the original program that created them. XPS serves as the standard format for print output under Windows Vista and is to be supported directly by printers in the future .

Windows Vista supports the Universal Disk Format (UDF). This alternative to FAT and NTFS is particularly important for DVD-RAM .

The help system has been redeveloped under the name AP Help . This is based on XML and is intended to display content completely differently from the familiar HTMLHelp files.

The TCP / IP stack has been redesigned and benefits from multiple physical processors.

Games explorer

The game explorer was introduced in Windows Vista. Games installed on your computer will be displayed there. Games can be added manually. Information about the age ratings for the games can also be found.

Compatibility and special features of the 64-bit version

In contrast to the 32-bit version, the 64-bit version can manage significantly more memory and thus jump over the previously applicable 4 GB limit (effectively only 3.12 GB). Mechanisms with which the 32-bit version can also use more than 4 GB of RAM have not been added , unlike in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 . The maximum RAM sizes supported by the respective Vista versions differ: Vista Home Basic supports 8 GB RAM, Vista Home Premium 16 GB and Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate 128 GB RAM.

The 64-bit version requires a processor that supports the x86-64 instruction set and thus executes 64-bit code. Such processors are, for example, all AMD Athlon 64 and Phenom models, the 600 series of the Intel Pentium 4 , some Atom models and the Core 2 Duo .

Windows Vista 64 can run 32-bit and 64-bit applications at the same time. A WOW64 compatibility layer is used for this. 16-bit applications, however, are no longer supported; the 16-bit subsystem for old MS-DOS and Win16 programs, which was based on the Virtual 8086 mode , had to be omitted in the 64-bit version because the long-mode operating mode of the x86-64 architecture does not more supported. Furthermore, drivers must be available in 64-bit format and have a digital signature - however, this does not apply to x86-64 drivers created using the User-Mode Driver Framework (UMDF).

Sales model

New to Vista is the sales model called Windows Anytime Upgrade . Different editions can be installed with the same data carrier depending on the license number. The medium is no longer tailored to a license or license number. Only the 32-bit and 64-bit versions have different media, recognizable by the color of the covers (green or blue).

Hardware requirements

Microsoft specifies a processor with 800 MHz (recommended: 1 GHz), 512 MB RAM (recommended: 1  GB , double that for the 64-bit version) and a hard disk with 20 GB (recommended: 40 GB) as system requirements  . The requirements for graphics cards depend on the three graphics modes and the resolution. There are no further requirements in the "Classic" mode, but further requirements must be met in the Aero modes . This includes DirectX 9, since without it no aero glass effects can be performed. If no DirectX9 or compatible graphics driver is available, the Aero-Basic mode is used by default, which has a similar design to the Luna design under Windows XP.

In this context, the environmental organization Greenpeace recommended either upgrading the old PC or doing without Windows Vista.

Windows SideShow

SideShow allows information to be shown on small secondary displays on devices with Windows Vista, for example the time on the outside of a notebook.

Updates

Microsoft Windows Update

Updates are no longer accessed via Internet Explorer, as was the case with Windows XP and older, but via the control panel. As part of the monthly patch day , Microsoft regularly published updates for Windows Vista. So far, two service packs have been released which mainly contained these updates in a summarized manner. On April 11, 2017, Microsoft released updates for the last time, ending support for Windows Vista.

Service Pack 1

In February 2008, Microsoft completed the first service pack for Vista, which was made available for download to the general public on March 18, 2008 in English, German, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Service Pack 1 is offered as a complete package in a 32-bit version of around 430 MB and a 64-bit version of around 730 MB, as well as a 50-MB package via Windows Update . According to Microsoft, it should not be possible to create your own installation packages with an integrated service pack.

The installation of all previously published patches is required for the version that can be obtained via the update function ( Windows Update ). For certain drivers that are not compatible with Service Pack 1, updates must be installed separately. If additional Windows language packs are installed on the system, it will be updated when a Service Pack 1 version is available for all languages.

In addition to patches that were released up to this point in time, Service Pack 1 includes support for the successor to the BIOS, EFI . In addition, the driver library will be expanded to around 80,000 components with Service Pack 1. The data carrier format exFAT , which was designed for memory cards and was introduced with Windows Mobile 6.0, is supported and the hard disk encryption system is improved.

At the pressure of Google Inc. , after the service pack has been installed, it is possible to define any desktop search program as the standard.

Microsoft is also tightening the product activation of Vista and, among other things, makes two known methods of bypassing them unusable. To what extent this is effective is controversial. On the other hand, under pressure from OEM partners and corporate customers, the sanctioning of non-activated Windows licenses is softened by abolishing the mode of reduced functionality .

Service Pack 2

After delivering the preparatory update KB955430 at the beginning of May 2009, Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for download on May 26, 2009; Service Pack 1 must be installed. In addition to the patches that have been released since the release of Windows Vista SP1, it contains the following new hotfixes and functions:

  • Support of the Bluetooth standard 2.1
  • Description function for Blu-ray media
  • Support for the UTC time stamp in the exFAT file system
  • Support function for VIA 64-bit processors
  • Integration of Windows Connect Now
  • Patch against WLAN problems after standby
  • Integration of Windows Search 4.0 (also available separately)
  • Improved RSS - Gadget
  • Improved application compatibility
  • Revised code for fewer crashes
  • More understandable and useful (error) messages
  • Limitation of half-open TCP connections has been lifted (formerly limited to ten; was introduced with Windows XP SP2 to reduce the speed at which viruses spread)
  • Improved power management

Platform update

A platform update for Windows Vista was released on October 27, 2009. It requires Service Pack 2 and contains both new components that shipped with Windows 7 and updated runtime libraries.

criticism

Hardware requirements

While Microsoft claimed Windows Vista ran on almost all PCs sold after 2006, the higher requirements of some premium features like Aero deterred some users from updating. In addition to some desktop PCs, this problem mainly affected laptops with a tendency to underperform, as these often had too little RAM and often the graphics card or integrated graphics DirectX 9 was missing, which is necessary for running Aero.

User account control

The UAC prevents software have administrator privileges without the user's knowledge and can change so basic settings of the system implied. The user account control is a powerful security feature. However, it has been criticized for asking too many queries so that it becomes a nuisance for the user, which could lead to deactivation of the function. Microsoft has mitigated this problem with Service Pack 1 by significantly reducing the number of queries.

Inconsistent translation

The magazine c't reported that the quality of the German translation was significantly lower than that of other Microsoft products. Many texts and dialogues are confusing, inconsistent or incomprehensible, for example through word creations such as “block” instead of “block”.

DOS programs

The 16-bit subsystem of the 32-bit version of Windows Vista restricts DOS programs within the NTVDM to the use of 32 MB RAM. The predecessor Windows XP did not have this limitation. Like Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 64-Bit, the 64-bit version does not contain a 16-bit subsystem.

License restrictions

For the versions for home users Home Basic and Home Premium , the restriction that they could not be used in a virtual machine applied until January 2008 . This made it impossible to use Vista under Parallels on an Apple computer alongside MacOS X. This option was only included in the more expensive Business or Ultimate licenses. As an explanation for the ban, Microsoft stated that virtualization was only relevant for business customers and posed a security risk. However, at the end of January 2008, Microsoft lifted this ban.

Selling ban threat

At the end of March 2006, the European Union threatened Microsoft with a sale stop if the EU requirements (such as the disclosure of the communication interfaces of the operating system) were not observed.

Market penetration

In general, Windows Vista is rated as having little success in the media compared to its predecessor Microsoft Windows XP and its successor Microsoft Windows 7 . Microsoft itself commented positively on the sales figures; according to the manufacturer, the system was sold more than 100 million times in the first year of sales in 2007. During this period, 271 million PCs and notebooks were sold worldwide. In comparison, Microsoft Windows XP sold 67 million times in its first year of sales in 2002; this year there were 132 million PCs sold worldwide.

In July 2007, Gianfranco Lanci, President of the PC manufacturer Acer , criticized the fact that, in contrast to earlier Windows versions, Windows Vista had only given few incentives to buy new PCs.

In January 2007, the US Department of Transportation prohibited its employees from upgrading to Windows Vista; a similar ban was enacted in the US Department of Aviation ( FAA ). Numerous companies had postponed the switch. At the end of June 2008, Intel , General Motors and Daimler , among others , announced that they would skip Windows Vista.

At the end of February 2008, Microsoft announced that it would reduce the recommended retail prices for Windows Vista significantly. This was justified with the attempt to persuade other customers to update to Vista. In April 2008, plans for a marketing offensive were announced which, in addition to Vista, should also promote Microsoft's online and mobile phone business. The response to the system before the SP1, the lower performance and the resulting poor usability on mini notebooks are seen as further reasons for this step.
