Wonderful journey of little Nils Holgersson with the wild geese ( Japanese ニ ル ス の ふ し ぎ な 旅 , Nirusu no fushigi na tabi , "Nils' miraculous journey"), better known as Nils Holgersson , is an anime series from 1980, based on the Novel The wonderful journey of little Nils Holgersson with the wild geese by the Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf is based.

The family of the boy Nils Holgersson ( ニ ル ス , Nirusu ) lives on a farm with many animals in Västra Vemmenhög . But Nils makes fun of annoying animals, whether chickens, geese or cows, out of boredom or anger. He doesn't even bother about his hamster crumb, which he was given as a gift. When Nils once again doesn't want to go to church one Sunday, he has to stay at home and read a sermon. There he soon meets a little elf and blackmails him to conjure up the sermon in his head. But the elf does not want to get involved in such a trade and shrinks Nils and Krümel to the size of a thumb as a punishment for all his crimes.

While Nils is annoyed by the animals in the family as he annoyed them all the time, suddenly a flock of wild geese flies across the yard. The gander Martin wants to fly with them on the long journey to Lapland and tries to take to the skies - but with unwanted luggage: the thumbling Nils and his little hamster Krümel fly with them for fear of the animals on Martin's back. This is the beginning of a great friendship and a long journey on the back of the wild geese. The flock of wild goose where Martin, Nils and Krümel landed are, of all things , the respected flock of Akka von Kebnekajse . She dislikes people and tame geese, but quickly takes a liking to the three newcomers, as they are very brave and often protect the flock from enemies such as the insidious fox Smirre.

Origin and emanations

Narumitsu Tagushi wrote the script for the series, making some changes to the novel's original plot. For example, he added new figures such as the hamster crumb or in the original carrot ( キ ャ ロ ッ ト , Kyarotto ); Krümel mentions his real name Carrot twice in the course of the series ("Daunenfein", "Walpurgisnacht"). The role of the fox Smirre has been expanded.

The animation studio Studio Pierrot animated the series consisting of 52 episodes. The Austrian production studio Apollo Film and the Japanese studio Gakken co- produced the anime. Hisayuki Toriumi directed and Mamoru Oshii also directed some episodes . Oshii later became known through films such as Ghost in the Shell . The characters were designed by Toshiyasu Okada , who also performed this function in the anime series Dallos (1983) and Area 88 (1985). Mami Koyama played the role of the Nile in the Japanese original version . Karel Svoboda composed the music for the German version .

From January 1980 to March 1981, the series premiered on the Japanese television network NHK . In the following years it also ran in Germany, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece, France, Sweden and Hungary. In Germany it was shown for the first time from August 29, 1981 to October 2, 1982 in the regional programs Bavaria, Hesse and Southwest of the ARD . Order of the episodes

Compared to the Japanese production sequence, the sequence of the episodes in the German version has been changed significantly.   1. The Wichtelmännchen : Nils catches an elf and does not release it, although it offers him a silver coin. The elf conjures him and the hamster crumbs as small as a thumb . At the same time, however, he can also understand the language of animals.
  2. The call of the wild geese: Now the animals want to return the favor for the pranks, and Nils gets scared. Wild geese circling above the farm, mocking and luring the domestic geese: " Fly with us to Lapland! " The clumsy gander Martin flutters after them and takes Nils, who wants to hold him, with him.
  3. The fox Smirre: When the fox Smirre steals the wild goose Ingrid, Nils pursues him and frees her. With this he impresses the wild geese and makes the fox his enemy.
  4. The squirrel children: While searching for food, Nils discovers a trapped squirrel , whose young have remained alone in the forest. Nils looks for the little ones in the forest and brings them to their mother's cage.
