However, it is the age-old tradition of handcrafted roll-your-own tobacco that has earned Poço Fundo its regional fame. Since the 19th century, the town has been renowned as the "capital of tobacco," thanks to the exceptional quality of its traditional tobacco production.

Poço Fundo, a hidden gem in the Brazilian countryside, combines natural wonders, architectural treasures, and a proud heritage in tobacco craftsmanship, making it a truly captivating destination.

==History==
Poço Fundo is a municipality located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was founded on April 2, 1870, coinciding with the day of São Francisco de Paula and marked by the beginning of the construction of the town's church. This significant project was conceived by Captain Francisco Ferreira de Assis of the National Guard, the second Baron of Alfenas, and Lieutenant Manoel Coutinho Rezende, who formed part of the church construction committee. The church is considered the cornerstone of the urban nucleus, serving as its central landmark.

Originally, the village belonged to Alfenas and later became part of Caldas and São Gonçalo do Sapucaí. In 1890, it became a municipality within the jurisdiction of Machado, as determined by Governor João Pinheiro da Silva, until its emancipation. However, it was in 1923 that Poço Fundo experienced a significant turning point in its history.

Through State Law 843, enacted by Governor Raul Soares, São Francisco de Paula do Machadinho broke away from Machado and adopted the name "Gimirim," meaning "small axe" in the Tupi language. This new name symbolized the town's determination to forge its own path and assert its unique identity.

In 1924, the City Council was established, with José Dias de Gouvêa, also known as "Coronel," assuming the dual role of the first president and the head of the Municipal Executive. During this period, the position of mayor had not yet gained autonomy, and Gouvêa, the son of the Baron of Alfenas and a co-founder of the town, played a crucial role in shaping the town's progress.

On December 12, 1953, Governor Juscelino Kubitschek signed State Law 1,903, officially changing the town's name to Poço Fundo. The name was derived from a rural neighborhood that had been producing the renowned "Poço Fundo" tobacco for many decades. This tobacco became the municipality's primary economic resource and played a central role in shaping its identity.

According to the 2010 IBGE Census, the current population of Poço Fundo is 15,961 inhabitants, with a population density of 33.6 individuals per square kilometer. The town represents a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, with echoes of its rich history resonating through its streets.

Poço Fundo continues to stand as a testament to the resilience and spirit of its people. From its humble beginnings as a village to its vibrant present as a thriving municipality, the town embodies a captivating journey of growth and development.

In the neighborhood of Cachoeira Grande, you can find the Poço Fundo Hydroelectric Plant on the Machado River, along with its respective dam with a height of approximately 200 meters. It was installed in 1949 by the Rede Sul Mineira de Eletricidade and later acquired by CEMIG.

Tourist Sites
In Poço Fundo, you can explore the ruins of the mansion and the tomb of Lourenço Westin, a controversial figure in history and the first consul of Sweden.

Various stories and legends surround the consul to this day, which have piqued the interest of writer Júlio Olivar. In 2005, he published the book "The Mystery of the Consul"[1], which delves into the biography of the legendary Westin.

The book has attracted the attention of many tourists, scientists, researchers, including foreigners, who have come to explore the ruins of Fazenda do Jardim. This structure dates back to the colonial period of Brazil (around 1790) and was the residence of Lourenço Westin between 1830 and 1846.

Other points of interest that attract visitors are the several waterfalls. Among them, the following stand out:
