The city belongs to the mesoregion of Jequitinhonha and to the microregion of Araçuaí. The elevation of the municipal seat is 269 meters. It became a municipality in 1943. This municipality is located 33 kilometers to the west of the important BR-116 highway. It is connected by paved road. The Jequitinhonha River flows through the town.
