Șicula (Hungarian: Sikula ) is a municipality in Arad County , in the Kreischgebiet , in western Romania . The villages of Chereluș and Gurba also belong to the municipality of Gemeindeicula .

Geographical location

Șicula is located in the Kreisch area , on the national road DN 79A , six kilometers from Ineu , 12 kilometers from Pâncota and 22 kilometers from Chișineu-Criș , at the foot of the Zărand Mountains .

The first written mention of Sycula comes from 1334.

In the course of the centuries different spellings of the place name appeared: 1334 Sicula , Sycula , 1335 Sicula , 1459 Sicula , 1715 Sikula , 1808 Sikula , 1839, 1851 Sikula , 1858, 1863 Sikula , 1877 Sikula , 1882 Sikula , 1893 Sikula , 1909 Şicula , Sikula , 1913 Sikula , 1921 Şicula , Sikula , 1932, 1956 Şicula .

After the Peace of Karlowitz (1699), Arad and the Maroscher Land came under Austrian rule , while the Banat south of the Marosch remained under Turkish rule until the Peace of Passarowitz (1718) . On the Josephine land survey is Sikula entered. As a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Arad region, like the whole of Banat and Transylvania, was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy . The official place name was Sikula . The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the regulation of borders , whereby Șicula fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
