history

The first written mention of Ortofronea comes from the year 1437.

After the Peace of Karlowitz (1699), Arad and the Maroscher Land came under Austrian rule , while the Banat south of the Marosch remained under Turkish rule until the Peace of Passarowitz (1718) . As a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Arad region, like the whole of Banat and Transylvania, was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy .

Fort Purgly was built in 1789, according to some historians, although it first appeared in historical documents in 1889. The baron János Purgly designed the castle in its current form. After his death, his son László Purgly inherited the castle and then his daughter Magdolna Purgly, who married Miklos Horthy from Arad in 1901 .

The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the regulation of borders , whereby Șofronea fell to the Kingdom of Romania .

After the communists came to power , László Purgly was deported to the Târgu Jiu labor camp in 1949 . In 1951 he was released and returned to Arad. The fort became the seat of the agricultural production cooperative . After 1989 Daniel Negrea acquired the property. He renovated the fort and opened a thermal bath . The medicinal springs on the grounds of the fort are particularly suitable for rheumatism . The fort is now part of the country's national cultural heritage.
