… And the robbers keep popping forever is an Austrian film game from 1962 . Under the leadership of Helmuth Lohner , a group of popular screen stars of that time plays. Directed by Franz Antel , the script was written by Kurt Nachmann based on the novel “Nikolaus Tschinderle, Räuberhauptmann” by Josef Friedrich Perkonig .

action

Austria, towards the end of the 18th century. The slender little tailor Nikolaus Tschinderle is not really taken seriously by his fellow citizens; everyone scoffs at him and jokes. One day Nicholas has had enough. He wants to show everyone and become a robber, a terrifying robber, preferably a robber captain. And so he goes into the woods to build his own gang there. His cronies are the tramps Seppele, Achilles and Elias, all of whom are also more good-natured than terrifying types.

Tschinderle doesn't even have to be active himself, there are enough dark fellows out in the forest whose misdeeds he just needs to take on his hat. But as the real robbers soon appear who make it seriously difficult for his roommates, Nikolaus cannot avoid changing his strategy and becoming a "good robber". From then on, his basically decent character forces him to always do good deeds. One day Count Ildefons, who is in love with Lucina, the daughter of the sovereign Prince Zeno, comes across Tschinderle's lazy magic and convicts him. In order to preserve its reputation, it is decided to stage a false execution ...

Production notes

Franz Antel had been planning for a long time to film Perkonig's novel about the robber captain Tschinderle. Finally he succeeded in a cooperation with Bavaria and a world sales contract with Arthur Cohn , which made it possible to finance the costly project. The film was shot in Slovenia, including in the Postojna Caves . The buildings were designed by Otto Pischinger and Herta Hareiter ; the latter was also responsible for the costumes. Heinz Pollak was the production manager, the later Oscar winner Branko Lustig was one of the two production managers. Herbert Janeczka took care of the sound, Kurt Kodal assisted head cameraman Hanns Matula .

... and the robbers pop forever was premiered on December 17, 1962 in Vienna. Franz Antel ironically described the film title invented by the distributor as "sparkling spirit" and had to state: "The audience stayed at home in droves, and the moody robber pistol was quite a flop."

criticism

"A picture-book film with joy to sing, whose parodic intentions do not come to fruition."

Paimann's film lists summed up: "In a stylish (end of the 18th century) presentation and attractively color-photographed."

"Franz Antel's Robin Hood story would have done better with a more ironic look."
