Zhuhai 1000 km race in 2010
The Zhuhai 1000 km race 2010 , also called Zhuhai 1000 kms China, Zhuhai , took place on November 7th at the Zhuhai International Circuit and was the only championship run of the Asian Le Mans Series this year.
Before the race
As in 2009 , the Asian Le Mans Series consisted of only one race in 2010 , as the 1000 km race in Shanghai was canceled again. However, the race was also part of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, which was held for the first time . The cup comprised one race each from the European , American and Asian Le Mans Series. After the 1000 km race at Silverstone and the Petit Le Mans , the Zhuhai race was the third and last of the cup.
The race
Both Peugeot and Audi each brought two works cars to China . The large Peugeot works driver squad made it possible to fill the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP with new driver pairings. Sébastien Bourdais drove the number 1 car with Simon Pagenaud . The vehicle with the number 2 was driven by Franck Montagny and Stéphane Sarrazin . Allan McNish / Tom Kristensen and Romain Dumas / Rinaldo Capello sat in the two Audi R15 TDI cars used by Joest Racing . In qualifying, Stéphane Sarrazin was the fastest in the Peugeot. With a time of 1: 21.8689 minutes, he was 1.2 seconds faster than Allan McNish in the best-placed Audi, who was third overall. In between was the second Peugeot with Bourdais at the wheel.
In the race, the difference between the two Peugeots and the Audis was far smaller than in practice. The different racing strategies meant that the lead changed between the Peugeot with the number 2 (Montagny / Sarrazin) and the two Audis after each refueling stop. The second Peugeot fell back after a collision while lapping. The decision was made on lap 219, when Sarrazin came to the pits for a final splash-and-dash stop and then just kept the lead over Tom Kristensen's Audi. In the last 13 laps he was able to fend off Kristensen's attempts to overtake and won with a lead of four seconds.
It was the 19th overall victory of the Peugeot 908 HDi Fap, which the works team fielded for the last time in Zhuhai. In 2011 the model was replaced by the Peugeot 908 , only Oreca contested a few races with the 908 HDi FAP in 2011.
