The 1977/78 season of the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey was the fifth season of the second highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . In addition to the champions Augsburger EV , which took the place of the insolvent Krefelder EV , as a result of the increase in the Bundesliga to twelve teams, the Mannheim ERC and ESV Kaufbeuren also rose to the top division.

As a newcomer, ERC Freiburg also managed to reach the championship group straight away. Because no club joined them from the Bundesliga, the last place had EHC 70 München not in the league dismount. The top scorers of the league were Milt Black and Ernst Höfner from the champions Augsburger EV.

First, the twelve participating teams played a single round, after which the first six qualified for the championship group. In this, the champions and promoted to the Bundesliga were determined in a double round. Due to the increase in the Bundesliga to twelve teams, the second and third placed also rose to the first division. The six last-placed clubs in the preliminary round played in the relegation group, also in a double round, to stay up. The points from the preliminary round were taken into the respective final round. Since no team was relegated from the Bundesliga, the last of the relegation group could remain in the 2nd Bundesliga.
