The 1979/80 season of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga was the seventh season of the second highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . Since the Augsburg EV withdrew to the league before the season , the third place in the promotion round, the Herner EV, moved up to the 2nd Bundesliga.

Both the champion ESV Kaufbeuren and the second-placed EHC 70 Munich were promoted directly to the Bundesliga at the end of the season, their places were taken by the first division relegated ERC Freiburg and ECD Iserlohn . The last placed EV Regensburg , however, had to relegate to the league , while the penultimate, the Herner EV , benefited from the cessation of the game operations at SG Nürnberg and could thus remain in the league.

In contrast to the previous year, the 2nd Bundesliga was played again in the form of a simple double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams. Champion and runner-up directly in the Bundesliga , while the two last placed in the league had to dismount.
