The 1996/97 season of the 2nd ice hockey league was the third season of the new third highest German ice hockey division. The champions SC Bietigheim-Bissingen failed at the end of the season in the promotion play-offs to the Hacker-Pschorr-Liga , instead the second in the 2nd League South, ERSC Amberg , qualified for the second highest division. ESV Bayreuth , FTV Hamburg and GEC Nordhorn made it out of the regional leagues .

Group south

In the group south, a main round with 16 participants was to be played first, from which only 15 participants were left after the withdrawal of the EV Pfronten . At the end of the main round, the participants in places 1 to 8 took part in the promotion play-offs to the Hacker-Pschorr-Liga , while the other participants had to take part in the play-downs .

Group north

The group north started with only nine instead of the planned twelve teams. First, the clubs played a main round. Since EHC Salzgitter withdrew from the game, all eight remaining participants qualified for the qualifying round for the 1st League North .
