4th stage: Dessau - Mittweida , 148 km

The stage was ideally suited for outliers due to the rain and constantly changing climbs and descents. Rainer Salan and Burkhard Freese pulled away from the field after just 14 km. A larger group around Siegbert Schmeißer joined the two leaders after 60 km. On an ascent 10 km before the finish, Schmeißer blew up the leading group with Schröder, Preising and Petermann and sprinted in the stadium at Schwanenteich in Mittweida for the day's victory, which he then secured. The leader of the overall standings Uwe Freese reached the stage goal more than two minutes behind and lost his yellow jersey to the winner of the day.

8th stage: across the Harz , 119 km

The last stage, “Across the Harz”, with start and finish in Nordhausen , was all about the fight for the best climber (green jersey) . Hans-Joachim Hartnick, who lost the one the day before to the Pole Firkowski, tried desperately to outrun him in the initial phase. This was achieved by Bernd Drogan , who placed third in this classification, together with Detlef Kletzin and the Czechoslovaks Ladislav Ferebauer and Milan Sel. When Drogan then won the decisive mountain classification on Wendefurther Berg (79 km), the green jersey passed into his possession. Last but not least, he secured the day's victory on the Hohekreuzsportplatz in Nordhausen, in which he was able to break away from his companions before the finish line. The leader of this tour, Siegbert Schmeißer, rolled over the finish line in the main field, which was enough for him to win overall.
