Adolf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolf or Adolph is a male given name and family name .

Origin and meaning

The name comes from Old High German and is composed of adal (noble, elegant) and wolf ( wolf ). This can be understood together as “noble wolf” or “noble wolf”, but many old Germanic personal names are simply composed of two positive terms, without the composition as such having to have any meaning.

popularity

Both in Protestant Germany (because of Gustav Adolf and Adolph von Knigge ) and in Catholic (because of Adolph Kolping ) Adolf had a certain popularity. In 1890 the name was thirteenth on the popularity list of all male first names in Germany. But since the beginning of the 20th century the frequency of first names has been decreasing. After an upswing from 1933, which lasted until 1942, the use of the name - probably in relation to the popularity of Adolf Hitler - collapsed . Since the early 1950s, the first name Adolf was rarely given to newborns in German-speaking countries. The name is heavily burdened by the dictator Adolf Hitler and also by other National Socialists such as Adolf Eichmann .

The name was also popular in Sweden , where several kings bore the name. However, in no decade since the 1920s he was among the top ten most popular given names. In 2015 there were only around 2600 bearers of this name in Sweden. Since 1998 at the latest, fewer than ten newborn boys have been given this name each year.
