Ardahan is a Turkish province in the northeast of the country on the border with Georgia and thus a border region between Eastern Anatolia and Transcaucasia . Between 1924 and 1926 the province of Ardahan was already independent, then came to the province of Kars and was spun off from this again in 1992. The capital of the province is Ardahan of the same name .
In the south it borders on the province of Kars, in the southwest on Erzurum , in the west on Artvin and in the north and east on Georgia. A small part borders on Armenia . It has an area of 4,934 km² and 97,096 inhabitants (as of the end of 2017). The population consists of Turks and Azerbaijanis (including Yerli- Ahiska and Karapapaks / Terekeme ) and minorities such as Georgians , Lasen , Kurds , Circassians and others. Ardahan is also the first destination for guest workers (including Georgians and Azerbaijanis).

history
The oldest inscriptions from Ardahan can be found at Çıldır ( Hanak inscription ) and come from the Urartians . The Cimmerians got here in the 8th century BC. BC on their way from the Caucasus to Anatolia in hostile contact with the kingdom of Urartu. After Urartu ruled around 650 BC The Medes this area. The rule of the Medes went in 550 BC. To the Persians . Ardahan then belonged to various empires and cultures, including the Georgians, Greeks , Romans and Armenians , and came under the control of the Seljuks in 1069 . After the occupation of Georgia by Soviet Russia , the province was transferred to Turkey with the Treaty of Kars in 1922 . Ardahan was combined into one province with Kars, but restored as a separate province in 1992.
