Artur , also spelled Arthur , is a male given name and a family name. The name is in the English language and in its short form type in use.

Origin and meaning

The name Arthur is of Celtic origin and stands for Artaios , the " bear ". Alternatively, the name is derived from the Roman family name Artorius . The derivation from Nordic Arnthor ("Adler" and " Thor ") also occurs occasionally. The h did not find its way into the name until the 16th century.
