Diego Orlando Benaglio (born September 8, 1983 in Zurich ) is a former Swiss football goalkeeper who also has an Italian passport. He was most recently under contract with AS Monaco and was active for the Swiss national team until 2014 .
Career
In the club
Benaglio left the Grasshopper Club Zurich in the German Bundesliga in 2002 and signed with VfB Stuttgart . There he was the club's third goalkeeper, first behind Timo Hildebrand and Thomas Ernst , and later behind Hildebrand and Dirk Heinen . That is why he, trained by Stuttgart goalkeeping coach Eberhard Trautner , was only used in the second team in the Regionalliga Süd . Since he saw no future for himself in Stuttgart in the long run, he moved to Portugal in 2005 to Nacional Funchal in the SuperLiga . There he fought for a regular place.
In January 2008, VfL Wolfsburg signed the Swiss national goalkeeper, who signed a contract dated until summer 2012. He replaced the previous goalkeeper Simon Jentzsch . After he had taken over the shirt number one in the 2008/09 season, he achieved the first championship title in the club's history with Wolfsburg . The next season was changeable for the Swiss. On the fifth day of the game he received a red card and two games suspension. In October 2009 Benaglio extended his contract with VfL Wolfsburg until 2013. At the beginning of the second half of the season he was out for several weeks due to knee problems. Nevertheless, he remained the number 1 of Lower Saxony in this and the following season, in which Wolfsburg had to fight relegation until the last day of the game.
From August 2012, Benaglio was the Wolfsburg team captain as the successor to Christian Träsch .
After Benaglio in the season 2016/17 his place at Koen Casteels had lost, he joined the French champions in the summer of 2017 AS Monaco .
On August 18, 2020, he announced the end of his career.
National team
He made his debut for Switzerland on June 3, 2006 in the international match against China . At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he was the third goalkeeper for the Swiss after Pascal Zuberbühler and Fabio Coltorti .
On February 5, 2008, the then Swiss national coach Jakob Kuhn announced that he would bet on Diego Benaglio as the goalkeeper at the 2008 European Championships in Switzerland and Austria . This ended a month-long discussion about the number 1 in the Swiss goal.
In Switzerland's first game during the 2010 World Cup against European champions Spain , Benaglio managed to keep his goal clear, giving Switzerland their first win over Spain and the only Swiss win at the World Cup.
In summer 2012 he took the captain and as a senior of three players Olympic team at the Olympic Football Tournament in London in part. For Switzerland this was the first participation in 84 years. After a draw against newcomer Gabon and defeats against South Korea and Mexico , Switzerland was eliminated after the preliminary round. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , Benaglio was on the pitch in every game. In the game against France he saved a penalty from Karim Benzema . Switzerland narrowly failed in the second round to Argentina , with the decisive goal not falling until the 118th minute.
On August 20, 2014, Benaglio announced his retirement from the national team.
