Chester Zoo is a zoo at Upton by Chester in Cheshire , England . It was founded in 1931 by George Mottershead and his family. It is one of the largest zoos in the UK with 125  acres (51  hectares ) open to visitors. The zoo also has a total area of approximately 400 acres (162 hectares).

It is maintained by the North of England Zoological Society , a Registered Charity from 1934, and receives no government grants. It is the most visited animal exhibition in Britain with more than 1.4 million. Visitors in 2014. In 2007, Forbes listed it as one of the fifteen best zoos in the world. In 2015 it was named the best zoo in Great Britain and seventh best zoo worldwide by TripAdvisor.

history

The Mottershead family nursery was in Shavington near Crewe . George Mottershead collected lizards and insects that were among the imported exotic plants. A visit to the Belle Vue Zoo in Manchester in 1903 piqued the boy’s interest in building his own zoo.

Mottershead was wounded in World War I and spent several years in a wheelchair. Regardless of this, his collection of animals grew and he started looking for a suitable place for his zoo. He selected Oakfield Manor in Upton by Chester . Back then the place was a rural village, whereas today it has become a suburb of Chester . Mottershead acquired Oakfield Manor in 1930 for £ 3,500 . The manor house had 3.6 hectares (9 acres) of gardens and was conveniently located with connections to the railway lines and to Manchester and Liverpool . Despite resistance from the town, Mottershead prevailed and the Chester Zoo opened on June 10, 1931. The first animals were exhibited in small enclosures in the courtyard.

After the Second World War , there was a rapid expansion, despite great difficulties in procuring the necessary materials. Mottershead had to build in a way that conserved resources. The polar bear enclosure (1950) was built using materials from roadblocks from the war and pillboxes (small bunkers). "Always building" was the zoo's slogan at the time. Mottershead received an Order of the British Empire and was President of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (then International Union of Zoo Directors) . He died in 1978 at the age of 84.

On December 15, 2018, there was a fire in the rainforest house, the Monsoon Forest facility, which was opened in 2015 due to an electrical fault. The fire broke out during opening hours at lunchtime. As a result, the visitors were evacuated and attempts were made to lure the animals to the outdoor areas of their enclosures in order to protect them from burns and death. All mammals and some birds could be saved by the keepers, many insects, fish, frogs and birds died in the fire. The zoo was able to open to visitors the next day. The rainforest house will reopen in summer 2020.

Chester Zoo was closed during the 2020 corona pandemic . Instead, he offered visitors a virtual tour of the zoo. Various animals were shown over several hours via live stream .

layout

Mottershead wanted a zoo without the traditional Victorian iron bars. He was influenced by the ideas of Carl Hagenbeck and Heini Hediger , a pioneer in ethology .

In Chester, Mottershead realized Hagenbeck's idea for ditches and water pits as an alternative to cage bars and implemented them throughout the zoo, often also for species for which Hagenbeck had not intended. For example, in 1956 the chimpanzees were given a new enclosure, a group of green islands where they were only separated from visitors by a 12 ft (3.8 m) wide moat. Nobody knew if chimpanzees could swim and it was relieved to find out that chimpanzees cannot. Today the enclosure forms the heart of the zoo.

In 1986 the zoo had to be fenced in due to the Zoo Licensing Act 1981 .

In 2007, the Realm of the Red Ape facility was opened, a facility over the forests of Indonesia with endangered species of Sumatra and orangutans from Borneo .

In 2009 the zoo released the Natural Vision , a £ 225 million plan to transform the zoo into Europe's largest conservation attraction. Among other things, with the construction of a new Africa facility and a hotel. These plans were abandoned in 2011 after £ 40million. the funding was lost because the North West Regional Development Agency was abolished.

In December 2012, permission was given to tackle a phase of the Natural Vision master plan. The Islands at Chester Zoo project is one of the largest zoo renovation projects in Europe, valued at £ 40 million. to expand the profile of the zoo and to renew the six island habitats to Southeast Asia . Among other things, a rainforest house was built. In 2015, the work in this area was completed.

administration

The North of England Zoological Society (NEZS) runs the Chester Zoo and the Act for Wildlife conservation organization . It was founded in 1934 by George Mottershead.

The zoo itself is run by an executive team led by Mark Pilgrim , the Director General. He is responsible for the zoological teams, for science and education, for on-site nature conservation work and research as well as for the entire zoo grounds. Jamie Christon is a managing director responsible for development, finance, guests and management, marketing, human resources, and health and safety. Both are responsible to a Board of Trustees for The North of England Zoological Society .

Facilities

New footbridge over Flag Lane.

There are electric vehicles , lockers and the possibility to borrow buggies.

The zoo is divided by a public path called Flag Lane. For many years only a single bridge ( Elephants' Bridge ) led from one area to another near the elephant enclosure. A second crossing ( Bats' Bridge ) was built in 2008 near the Twilight Zone .

Other means of transport in the zoo are the monorail and a boat tour on the lazy river in the "Islands" facility. There are the restaurants Bembé Kitchen (2006), June's Pavilion , Manado Street Kitchen (on Sulawesi in the island complex), Oakfield Restaurant (in a Victorian building near the lion complex), and the Acorn Bar . There are also playgrounds, shops and kiosks as well as several picnic areas.

The first entrance was at the east end, on Caughall Road , which is still temporarily open as a pedestrian entrance to Oakfield House. The main entrance was relocated to the A41 Chester By-Pass in 2006 with new parking . Since then, one has entered the zoo in the extension part built in the 1990s to the west of Flag Lane . Outside of the publicly accessible part, the zoo also owns other large pieces of land on which u. a. Forage for herbivores is grown.

Monorail

The Chester Zoo monorail.

A $ 4 million monorail system was built by Computerized People Mover International in 1991 and opened by Duchess of Kent . The system is 1 mile (1½ km) long and runs on an elevated rail. The route runs once around the zoo and crosses Flag Lane twice. The two parking halves are connected by the system and there is a station on each side. One of them is by the lion enclosure and the other near the monkey enclosure. Each train offers seats for 24 passengers in four compartments. One round lasts 15 minutes.

The train is driven by electric motors on a guide rail. There is a separate depot and a control room. Around 2,000 passengers are carried every day. In 2009, T&M Machine Tool Electronics made £ 300,000 improvements to the electrical system and chassis, including installing new 25 mi (40 km) of wiring. The monorail was inaugurated by Pete Waterman on July 23, 2009. The improved system runs with 2.2 kW AC motors arranged in pairs , with remote monitoring via a 5Ghz wireless link . Just a week later there was a power outage, whereupon the first eight passengers had to be taken off the train with a lifting platform.

In May 2012, Queen Elisabeth II drove a lap of honor in a specially decorated train on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee .

The monorail was closed in summer 2019 and then demolished. Due to the spatial expansion of the zoo in the years of its operation, too little area was covered by the monorail.
