action

King Ansgar suffers from an incurable disease and thinks the time has come to consider his successor. There is a choice between his two sons: Falk, the combative, selfish and power-obsessed of the two, or Lennard, who always treats his fellow human beings with kindness and respect. The king is agonizing over this question and cannot make up his mind. The king's personal physician constantly devises new and increasingly unusual methods to cure the king, but none of them have the desired result.

One day the hunter proposes to look for the "water of life" and bring it to the king. It is said to be a miracle cure that can cure every imaginable disease and can be found in the Mirkwood. Falk, the braver of the two princes, sets off for the Bleak Forest, where he gets lost. He meets the sorceress Salwa, who wants to put him to the test. She asks Falk for a piece of bread , water or a couple of cruisers , but Falk arrogantly refuses. In the rising mist of the sorceress Salwa, Falk falls into a ravine , where he lies unconscious.

When Prince Falk does not return, Prince Lennard starts a search. He also meets the sorceress Salwa, who is one of the forces of good, from which the “water of life” also comes. He passes her test, shares bread and sausage with her. She then shows him the way to the castle and gives him help and advice on passing the three exams that are waiting for him there. He finally reaches the eerie castle that has a curse on it. The residents of the castle have turned to stone. In the castle he finds the sleeping princess Friederike, who he hopes will be able to show him the way to the “water of life”. He kisses her and brings her back to life.

Princess Friederike informs the prince that he now has to pass three exams and must leave the castle before the twelfth stroke of the bell in order to free the castle and its inhabitants from the curse. The first test is solving a wrong equation . With Friederike's encouragement and Salwa's words in memory, he passed the first test. The second task leads Prince Lennard behind a gate where there is a hidden chamber. A tremor begins, the walls threaten to collapse, but Prince Lennard also solves the second test with the help of his talent for combination and Salwa's clues.

In the third test, Prince Lennard encounters the forces of evil. In a mirage he sees his recovered father and his brother Falk, who inform him that he has already passed the third test and is to be crowned king tomorrow. Friederike's voice warns him of the trap. Prince Lennard recognizes them and pushes back the creatures of the forces of evil. After passing three tests, the castle fountain contains water again and Prince Lennard can bring the “water of life” to his father. He promises to come back to Friederike to marry her. With their help and love, he can create anything. Shortly before the twelfth stroke of the bell, he leaves the castle. The curse has been lifted and the residents are awakened to new life.

In the forest he finds his unconscious and injured brother Falk, whom he brings back to this world with the "water of life". Falk secretly fills the "water of life" into his water bottle and puts brackish water from the gorge into Prince Lennard's water bag. When Prince Lennard gives the contaminated water to his father, it almost leads to the king's death. Prince Falk now pretends to have brought the true "water of life". The king's strength returns, his fever drops. The king then appoints Falk as king. The king does not believe Lennard's assurances that he was actually the one who fetched the healing water.

However, Prince Lennard recognizes the deception and threatens Falk to reveal the deception to the king. Prince Falk finally succeeds in convincing the father that Prince Lennard wanted to kill the king. He warns the king of alleged further assassination plans by Prince Lennard. The hunter Baldur is intended the prince in the forest in the hunt for pheasants to kill. However, the hunter can not carry out the murder as Prince Lennard has always treated him well and kindly and listened to him when he had something to say. He fired a shot to make everyone believe in the death of Prince Lennard.

In the forest, Prince Lennard meets the wise sorceress Salwa again. She encourages him not to give up and fight for his kingdom. Prince Lennard rides camouflaged back to the court, where the coronation of Prince Falk is already being prepared. Princess Friederike is now on her way to the king's court, too, because she could not wait for Lennard to return.

When the king wanted to appoint Prince Falk as his successor, Princess Friederike appeared and announced that the king's son had freed her kingdom from the curse and made her a marriage proposal. She explains to the king that the real hero is not Prince Falk, but Prince Lennard. The king recognizes Falk's deception and threatens him with punishment on the gallows . At this moment, Prince Lennard emerges from the crowd and reveals himself. The king asks Lennard for forgiveness, which is bestowed on him. He then names Lennard king. As a first official act, King Lennard pardons his brother Falk, who is now allowed to serve as a stable boy. As a second official act, Lennard appoints the hunter Baldur as his personal "friend on an equal footing". Then he can finally kiss his bride.

Reviews

In contrast to Grimm's original, in which the king's daughter is happy about her redemption and kisses the prince in thanks, the prince in the ARD fairytale film gives the sleeping king's daughter a kiss and releases her from a curse. But her reaction is initially dismissive ("What are you thinking of? You can't just kiss me without asking.") And slaps the prince. Critics see this as an attempt to modernize the fairy tale in the context of the discussion about sexual harassment and assault and to set new accents.
