Droste

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Droste is a family name .

Origin and Distribution

The family name is derived from the office of Drosten . In the Middle Ages , the Drostenamt was identical to the court office of the Truchsess , Latin dapifer , Middle High German drotsete . Various noble families in Westphalia took over the name Droste from such offices, which were reserved for the nobility and which became hereditary over time . From the aristocratic family Droste zu Hülshoff the latter official title carries z. B. the knight Engelbert vondeckebrock (1266–1298) in documents. The Droste zu Vischering (owner of the Erbdrostenhof in Münster), the Droste zu Senden , who are related to them, and the Droste zu Erwitte with their branch line Droste zu Füchten originally had a different family name like the Droste zu Hülshoff. Only occasionally were there family ties between these very different families.

The name Droste (without an addition) occurs quite often in northern Germany and the Netherlands, although ancestry from illegitimate descendants of aristocratic families can also exist, but is usually not verifiable. The namesake of many schools, streets and cultural institutions with the name "Droste" - for example for the Droste-Hülshoff high schools - is mostly the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff .
