Balıkesirspor is a Turkish football club from the north-west Anatolian city of Balıkesir . The red and whites play their home games in the Ataturk Stadium Balıkesir . The club played in the 1975/76 and 2014/15 seasons in the Süper Lig and is 65th in the all-time table of the Süper Lig .

history

Foundation and the first years

Balikesirspor in 1966 by the merger of the clubs Balıkesir İdman Yurdu , Balıkesir İdmanbirliği , Balıkesir İdmangücü , Balıkesir Karesi , Akıncılar Gençlik , Altı Eylül , Yıldırımspor , Egespor , Güven Ege and Doğan Hilâl founded in Balıkesir. For the season 1967/68 the club was included in the second highest Turkish league, today's TFF 1st Lig , and took third place in the table in the first season. From then on, they played in this league for eight years and missed promotion to the Süper Lig several times as second in the table . At the end of the season 1974/75 they reached the long-awaited championship of the TFF 1. Lig, and thus the direct promotion to the Süper Lig. A significant part of this success was the striker Özer Umdu awarded, nicknamed by his important headed goals Altın Kafa (dt .: Golden header). He was the top scorer of the Süper Lig 1978/79 while working for Adanaspor and is now one of the most important players in the club's history.

First division promotion and the following years

In the Süper Lig you ended the first half of the 1975/76 season surprisingly as fourth. In the second half of the season you experienced a big drop in performance and missed relegation. Then they played second class for ten years and then relegated to the third highest Turkish division.

Systemic relegation to the TFF 3rd Lig

Since Turkish professional football was to undergo fundamental changes in the 2001/02 season, preparations for this change were made in the 2000/01 season. So far, professional football in Turkey has consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-lane Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the second-rate five-lane and two-stage Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-rate, eight -lane Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig . Those teams that only occupied a middle place in the table in the third division 2000/01 season were assigned to the newly created fourth-highest Turkish division, the 3rd league, for the coming season. Balıkesirspor, which had finished the league in 14th place in the table, had to relegate to the 3rd Lig and thus to the amateur league after 34 years of professional football membership.

Return to professional football and fourth division years

After the system-related relegation in the summer of 2001, Balıkesirspor found it difficult to move up to the lowest Turkish professional league, the fourth-class TFF 3rd Lig . It was not until the 2005/06 season that the highest amateur league was finished as a champions, making the club return to professional football after six years.

Modern times

After being active in the fourth highest division from 2006 to 2010, they rose again to the TFF 2nd Lig . Here you missed promotion to the TFF 1st Lig in the 2011/12 season only in the relegation round. In the 2012/13 season they finally managed the long-awaited promotion to the TFF 1st Lig as champions of the TFF 2nd Lig (White Group).

Promoted to the Süper Lig , the club always occupied the bottom third of the table from the start of the season and did not manage to free itself from the defensive ranks in the long term under the master coach İsmail Ertekin . As a result of this misery, the club management dismissed Ertekin at the end of November 2014 and replaced him with Kemal Özdeş . With this coach and through new signings during the winter break, the team increased their performance. While the team suffered several major defeats in the first half of the season, they scored several points and now proved to be difficult to beat. After all of Özdeş's unfortunate lost games failed to escape the relegation region, he resigned at the end of April 2015 and was replaced by Cihat Arslan . Under this coach, the team began to play refreshing offensive football. The team brought reigning champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul into distress in their first game under Arslan . In the encounter on matchday 29, the team caught up twice and lost 3-2. After losing 2-1 to Istanbul Başakşehir on matchday 30 , they defeated Kasımpaşa Istanbul on matchday 31 and freed themselves from last place in the table after 27 matchdays. On the next match day, the team beat their direct relegation rivals Kardemir Karabükspor at home and got a better starting position for relegation. But since the direct relegation rival Çaykur Rizespor also got three points on the same day , Balıkesirspor lost the chance to stay in the league and was relegated.
