Paolo Emilio Taviani (born November 6, 1912 in Genoa , † June 18, 2001 in Rome ) was an Italian politician .

Life

Taviani was one of the founders of the Democrazia Cristiana , for which he was a member of the Camera dei deputati from 1948 to 1976 . From 1953 to 1958 he was Minister of Defense. From 1961 to 1968 and from 1972 to 1974 he headed the Ministry of the Interior. Francesco Cossiga (DC) appointed him Senator for Life in 1991 . In addition to his political career, Taviani worked as an economist and university professor and published not only economic works but also books about Christopher Columbus . In 2001 he died of a stroke at the age of 88.
