Florence County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Florence .

The county is located in northeast South Carolina, about 25 miles from North Carolina and has an area of 2082 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Marlboro County , Dillon County , Marion County , Williamsburg County , Sumter County , Clarendon County , Lee County, and Darlington Counties .
history
Florence County was formed on December 22, 1888. It was named after Florence Harllee (1848–?), A daughter of WW Harllee , a general and president of the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad .

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Snow's Island wetland , which Francis Marion used as a retreat during the American Revolutionary War. 25 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Florence County had 125,761 people in 47,147 households and 33,804 families. The population density was 61 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 58.65 percent white, 39.34 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.70 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.68 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.10 percent of the population.
Of the 47,147 households, 33.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.7 percent were married couples living together, 18.1 percent were single mothers, 28.3 percent were non-families, 24.5 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.08.
25.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 35,144 , and the median income for a family was $ 41,274. Males had a median income of $ 32,065 versus $ 21,906 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,876. 13.5 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
