Medieval foundation

Merten has an ancient history with the former knightly seat of Merten Castle and the former Merten Monastery (also known as Merten Castle in the vernacular ), which today houses a nursing home at the entrance to the town. The old castle, where the first Merten monastery probably stood, was probably located at the level of the railway cut.

Merten municipality

After the Rhineland was awarded to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Merten became an independent municipality, which was administered by the mayor's office Eitorf in the Uckerath district , which was newly created in 1816 . The Uckerath district was dissolved in 1820 and assigned to the Siegburg district (renamed Siegkreis in 1825). On January 1, 1935, the municipality of Merten was dissolved in favor of the municipality of Eitorf.

In 1885, the municipality of Merten consisted of 22 villages and places, and 968 people lived in 186 residential buildings. 955 of the residents were Catholic and 13 Protestant.

The localities belonging to Merten were: Bach , Balenbach , Bourauel , Bruch , Büsch , Driesch , Happach , Harmonie , Hatzfeld , Heckerhof , Hohn , Jägeroth , Juckenbach , Leye , Lützgenauel , Merten, Schiefen , Schmelze , Storch, Unterroth , Wassack and Weiden .

In 1885 the municipality of Merten had a total area of 1,511 hectares , of which 548 hectares were arable land, 88 hectares were meadows and 758 hectares were forest.

The municipality of Merten was incorporated into the municipality of Eitorf on January 1, 1935.

Merten also had its own elementary school, which was first held in the secularized Merten monastery and later in a building next to it.

War events

On March 26, 1945, the southern parish was surrendered to the American occupation forces. The bridges Merten, Bourauel, Kelters and, at noon, the last bridge at Alzenbach were blown up. The Allies stood on the Lindscheid and took fire from almost all districts with low-level aircraft and artillery bombardment . Merten Castle also burned down and stood empty for years as a fire ruin.

village life

For many years Merten was its own parish with its own pastor, but with its Rectorate Church of St. Agnes it has been affiliated to the parish of St. Patricius Eitorf since the late 1980s. The pastoral work is now completely taken over by the parish in Eitorf; until the end of the 1990s, Merten was still assigned its own subsidiary who lived and worked in the local rectory. Merten has its own cemetery.

In village life there is both a church choir (St. Agnes Merten) and a male choir with a large number of members. In addition, there is the so-called village association and the Mertener Schloßgespenster e- kindergarten, which was founded many years ago by a parents' initiative . V. It is worth mentioning the large Union Stud in the Siegaue , in which tractor meetings with a hundred vehicles are held every year. Except for the café in the orangery of Schloss Merten, there is no longer any gastronomy .

A visit to Merten is particularly worthwhile for cyclists and hikers, as it is easily accessible by public transport, but also via the Natursteig Sieg and cycle paths, both from the direction of Windeck and from the direction of Hennef (Sieg) .

traffic

In terms of traffic, Merten is supposedly isolated, but is less than 500 m away from the state road 333 through the Siegtal via a Siegbrücke bridge .

In public transport , Merten is located on the Deutsche Bahn victory line and has a S-Bahn stop. The S-Bahn line 12 runs every hour between the stations Au (Sieg) and Düren , the Cologne / Bonn Airport station is also connected to the S-Bahn line 19 from Monday to Friday. In the morning, in the direction of load , Merten is also served by the Rhein-Sieg-Express (RE 9) in the direction of Aachen . The long-distance train stations Siegburg / Bonn can be reached in 15 minutes and Cologne main station in 35 minutes.
