Life

Gloria von Thurn und Taxis is the second of four children of Joachim Graf von Schönburg-Glauchau (1929–1998) and his first wife Beatrix Széchenyi de Sárvár-Felsövidék (* 1930). She has three siblings, Maya Felicitas Countess von Schönburg-Glauchau (1958-2019), Carl Alban Graf von Schönburg (* 1966) and Alexander Graf von Schönburg-Glauchau (* 1969).

Her father was a journalist and worked as a foreign correspondent for a radio station . When he received the offer to go to Africa, he took his wife and two daughters with him. Gloria grew up in Togo and later in Somalia . In Africa she attended Benedictine schools with her sister Maya . In 1970 the family returned to Germany and lived at Willebadessen Castle for 2 years . From there, Gloria attended elementary school in Peckelsheim . Then she went to the Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium in Meckenheim , then she was a student at the girls' boarding school at Kloster Wald .

Alliance coat of arms Schönburg  / Thurn und Taxis (heraldically reversed)

In 1979 she first met Johannes von Thurn und Taxis (1926–1990), who later became the 11th head of the Thurn and Taxis family, in the Munich café Reitschule in Schwabing. The two married on May 31, 1980 in Regensburg . The marriage had three children:

After the birth of her first child, Gloria von Thurn und Taxis became known for her party life. The tabloid media focused on her sometimes unusual clothes and hairstyle. Headlines such as “Bayerns Gloria”, “Punker-Fürstin”, “Pop-Aristocrat”, “Princess TNT” or “Jet-Set-Darling” found in the press.

In 1982 her husband became seriously ill. Eight years later he died after a heart transplant . Shortly before his death on December 14, 1990, he gave her general power of attorney, and she hired specialists (including Nicolas Hayek ), with whose help she restructured the family company, which included various private banks, countless real estate , industrial holdings and a brewery . In order to be able to pay the inheritance tax of around DM 45 million, she had part of the inheritance auctioned off at the Sotheby’s auction house in 1992 .

In 1998, the Free State of Bavaria opened the Princely Treasury of Thurn und Taxis , a branch of the Bavarian National Museum, in a property owned by the family, St. Emmeram Castle . The representative rooms of the castle museum, the riding arena and the refectory are used for large events.

As an electoral woman of the CSU , she was a member of the 12th Federal Assembly in 2004 to elect the German Federal President .

Gloria von Thurn und Taxis publicly professes her Catholic faith. It is Prefect of 2006 by her following the Marian Men's Congregation Regensburg initiated prayer group Marian Frauencongregation "Annunciation" Regensburg (MFC), on the site until November 2012, the far-right and anti-Semitic blog kreuz.net was linked to. Gloria von Thurn und Taxis is a member of the Board of the pro-life movement Foundation yes to life and is involved in the Bavarian Foundation Hospice . She is a member of the board of trustees of the conservative Forum of German Catholics . During the Advent season, she regularly appears together with Sacco & Mancetti and members of the “Lebenshilfe choir” at the Christmas market at Thurn und Taxis Castle . She also reads the Christmas story based on Luke there .

Media presence

A well-known statement by her comes from the talk show Friedman on May 9, 2001: “Africa doesn't have problems because of a lack of contraception. People die of AIDS because they chuckle too much . Black people like to chuckle. "In September 2008, she said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag :" Africans are by no means different from us. The fact that they chatter more has to do with the climatic conditions down there ”, as they wore less clothes because of the warm climate. In her opinion, this and the larger population are the main reasons why there are significantly more people with AIDS in Africa. The successes in AIDS prevention in Uganda would be based on a concerted action of all non-governmental and governmental agencies with the active support of the president and the teaching of the ABC rule (abstinence, ( HIV test ), loyalty, condoms), with the churches following Bartholomäus Grill was only involved as part of the overall action and participated in spite of the promotion of condoms . Gloria von Thurn und Taxis records the successes above all for the church, which started a loyalty campaign together with the state and taught people the value of the family again. Only this protects against HIV / AIDS, but condoms do not. Your media presence initially decreased after this process.

In 2004, the sons of a deceased former manager had allegations about their father removed from their autobiography, which she had withdrawn in 1992 after a lawsuit. In the same book she also said that in 1990 she leaked financial documents to Manager Magazin , which turned them into a scandalous story.

In the series Durch die Nacht mit… on the ARTE station she was accompanied in a report by the gallery owner Leo König on a trip through New York. A short time later she had the purchased collection auctioned off at Phillips de Pury .

In recent times she has been in the public eye again: on the occasion of the Thurn & Taxis Festival in 2004, she took part in a production by Hofmannsthal's Jedermann . In addition, Gloria von Thurn und Taxis stepped into the limelight in 2012 with a self-produced rap song ("Schloss-Rap").

On April 4, 2005, Pope John Paul II called her on the talk show Beckmann im Erste as a “ pioneer for women's rights ”. She confirmed this statement in a later interview and justified this with the "theology of the body" developed by John Paul II. According to this, “the man must honor and love the woman” because she is “the bearer of life”.

Von Thurn und Taxis is also close to the right to life movement , in the context of which she campaigns against abortion and speaks of a “culture of death and killing”. According to their own testimony, with the election of Pope Benedict XVI. their years of prayers answered. In the run-up to the Pope's visit to Bavaria in 2006, she said that the words of Benedict XVI. "Help to cope with life with its ups and downs".

Von Thurn und Taxis described the Ecumenical Kirchentag 2010 in Munich as “a kind of ecumenical fair ” and said: “[…] I'm out of old age!” She also welcomes the re-admission of mass celebrations according to the Tridentine rite and advocated “in the sense of ecumenism ”Conversations with the Pius Brotherhood , as they see in“ these apostates from Rome our brothers and closest relatives ”.

In May 2012, von Thurn und Taxis spoke out against condom vending machines in schools on the TV show Markus Lanz and stated that they had lost nothing there, as had cigarette or “hashish vending machines”. When asked that it was about contraception among teenagers, she replied that they "should rather play tennis". She further stated that humans are "a monogamous animal"; Sharing partners, as was customary in the 68s, is very difficult for a woman: “Therefore, raising promiscuity is not a good idea. It damages society in the long term. "

In 2015, Thurn and Taxis warned that the refugee crisis in Germany was a “kind of war” and the harbinger of “a third world war”.

In autumn 2016 she had Gerhard Ludwig Cardinal Müller present his new book in her palace. Around 70 people were invited: Peter Gauweiler, Henryk M. Broder, Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Martin Mosebach, Prelate Wilhelm Imkamp, the brother of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Georg Ratzinger and journalists. Sven von Storch, the husband of AfD politician Beatrix von Storch, and Michael Klonovsky are also said to have been invited. Klonovsky is "journalistic advisor" to the then AfD chairwoman Frauke Petry, today he works as a "personal advisor" to the AfD parliamentary group leader Alexander Gauland. Around midnight, Cardinal Müller started a short speech: “The world is terrible.” It is the highlight of the evening, his presence a sign against the “zeitgeist”.

In June 2017, Gloria von Thurn und Taxis became a member of the supervisory board of the Kremlin- affiliated think tank Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute .

In July 2017, she said about the at least 547 cases of child abuse and abuse at the Regensburger Domspatzen , the question of whether the institution had made the cases possible was "total rubbish, that's just really mean". Sexual abuse exists in every school and every sports club and it will always be there. People like to go to church and that is a hit . The Cardinal and former Regensburg Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller did not have to apologize, the events were far ahead of his time. Thurn and Taxis classified blows as a means of education as a “completely normal educational means”. Victim spokesman Alexander Probst explained to von Thurn und Taxis' statements about physical violence: "Whoever dismisses something like that today with 'something like that was normal back then' really doesn't have all the slats on the fence anymore".

After the 2017 federal election, Gloria Thurn and Taxis wrote that she did not yet know what to make of the AfD and that she should continue to be watched and awaited.

In September 2018 she appeared on the "Bus for Freedom of Speech". In addition to Gloria, there were also AfD representatives among the organizers. In addition to her, the AfD politicians Benjamin Nolte and Thomas Deutscher were there. During the tour, people also spoke out against a sexual education of diversity and against an acceptance of homosexual and transsexual identity in school. She also referred to the, in her opinion, inadequate sex education classes, which take place too early, as a "form of child abuse". About the counter-demonstrators at the bus stop in Regensburg, she said: "Well, first of all I don't think they are Regensburg. [...] But it doesn't matter."

In January 2019, the Museo del Barrio in New York City withdrew a planned honor due to her controversial remarks and connections to former Trump strategist Stephen Bannon . Thurn and Taxis attributed this to the exaggerated “dictatorship of convictions”, in which “the philistines took over command”. Gloria is said to have previously offered her castle so that conservative forces from all over Europe and the USA (including Stephen Bannon and Benjamin Harnwell) can hold meetings in it. These so-called "gladiator schools" were intended for conservative Catholics who advocate the preservation of church traditions. Harnwell's ideology is about "defending the Christian-Jewish foundations of Western civilization" and promoting "populist nationalism". So there should be contacts between Banon and Harnwell and Gloria should also socialize with them. She denied that Gloria had offered her castle for the "gladiator schools". "You offer an open house."

In March 2019, Thurn und Taxis was the spokeswoman for the World Family Congress in Verona , a meeting of ultra-conservative Christians from which the Vatican distanced itself and against which there were massive protests. In October 2019, Bayerischer Rundfunk wrote that Thurn und Taxis said at an event in the USA: "The only two people in the world who give us clarity today are Donald Trump and Gerhard Ludwig Müller ". You even go so far as to say "that Gerhard Ludwig Müller is the Donald Trump of the Catholic Church". Trump, Thurn and Taxis said, stopped the abortion industry in the United States. In November 2019 she was one of the signatories of a petition “Against the Youngest Sacrilege”, which called on Pope Francis to public penance for “idolatry”. On November 15, 2019, she withdrew her signature after local bishop Rudolf Voderholzer criticized the petition.

In December 2019, Bayerischer Rundfunk reported that Thurn und Taxis spoke of a “systematic misleading” in front of almost 100 high-ranking representatives of forest sciences with regard to the climate debate . She said, "It is suggested that humans are to blame for climate change" and that science must do everything to make the debate more objective again, "so that we do not end up somewhere and total weirdos dominate the topic".

When asked by the Mittelbayerische Zeitung about connections to conservative and right-wing conservative politicians from the governments of US President Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán , she replied: "You are right-wing conservative today if you brush your teeth regularly."

In January 2020, she stated that although her family had been Protestant until the 19th century and she “still felt a lot of Protestantism ”, the Protestant Church was “today only a political association with a meditation component”. In May 2020 she said in an interview that “even the Catholic Church is about to act like a UN- compatible NGO ”. In connection with the COVID-19 pandemic , she opposed “ denigrating any counter-opinion” on the subject of Corona “as right-wing populism ”. She condemned the cancellation of services as a measure to contain the virus and described them as "pure harassment". Most of the churches, so their reasoning, are "so big that with the few people who come to mass, the distance was easily maintained even before the Corona crisis." She also criticized the German Bishops' Conference for the cancellation of services has contributed. She said that one could “actually get the impression that state officials are acting well and obediently here, who no longer seem to believe in the sacrificial meal ”. In their eyes, the bishops' conference is “superfluous because it robs the gentlemen of much time and strength”. Every high shepherd is “a sovereign prince” in his diocese, who can freely switch and rule.

In the context of the Corona crisis, Gloria also stated that "the devil [is] the cause of everything that goes bad on earth." So in this context also for the coronavirus. One can see a "hint of God" in everything that happens in the world. Her impression is that "sex and shopping are wonderful sedative drugs, so that religion simply no longer has any place in people's canon of needs." “The further we move away from God, the broader the power base of evil becomes.” She herself “decided early on to fight on the side of the good for faith in God”.
