Gornjak ( Russian Горняк ) is a city in the Altai region in southern Western Siberia ( Russia ) with 13,918 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the northwestern foothills of the Altai ( Kolywankamm ), in the steppe areas near the border with Kazakhstan, about 360 km southwest of the regional capital Barnaul . The Solotucha , a left tributary of the Alei, flows through the city .
The town of Gornjak is the administrative center of Lokot Raion .
Gornjak is on the railway line Lokot - Öskemen - Ridder or Syrjanowsk (station Newerowskaja ). The line is operated by the Kazakh State Railroad ( Kazakhstan Temir Scholy ) , although it leads about 70 kilometers over Russian territory , as it mainly opens up the area of Eastern Kazakhstan .
history
The village of Solotucha had existed in the place of today's town since the 18th century . Ores were mined here for the first time from 1751 to the middle of the 19th century ( Solotucha mine ). In 1939 mining was resumed and the village developed into a mining settlement. In 1942 the current name (Russian for miners ) was given, in 1946 the place was given the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1969 it was given city rights.

Culture and sights
In Gornjak there is a small local museum with a focus on the mining history of the area. Various remains of earlier mining from the 18th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the Rajon , such as the silver smelter (1782–1892) and copper smelter (1727–1896) in the village of Lokot.
Also near Lokot and the village of Sowetski Put a complex of settlement remains and Kurganen from the 2nd to. 1st millennium BC Discovered.
economy
The economy is based on mining and processing (enrichment) of the extracted copper , zinc , lead and tin ores ( Altaipolimetall ). There is also a food industry based on the agricultural products produced in the Rajon.
