Gruhen in the Ludwigsburg district

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gruhe von Erligheim: an old Gruhe in a typical location

There are around 60 Gruhen in the Ludwigsburg district . About half of them are still largely in their original state. Reinhard Wolf , Hans Dietl and Albrecht Gagsch published a comprehensive inventory in 1984. Reinhard Wolf updates a detailed inventory from time to time.

The present list follows the explanations of Wolf, Dietl and Gagsch in abbreviated form. Data from Wolf's updated inventory was used to locate the Gruhen. Furthermore, information on the construction and state of preservation of the pits as well as the importance of old road connections from this inventory was used.

introduction

Processing details of an old Gruhe (Erligheim): Lintel with a valley profile, artful pointed processing, wide and accurate edge cut
Processing details of a modern, carefully crafted Gruhe (Sersheim): rounded edges, machine-tipped and axed surfaces

The preserved historical Gruhen in the district of Ludwigsburg are made of sandstone , very often of reed sandstone . They are usually put together from simple blocks. Roundings of all kinds are not very common, but the lintels are often provided with a bevel on the lower edge . The surfaces were tips , Krönelung , Scharrierung , About Beilen designed or a combination of these options. In addition, an edge was often added. Wolf, Dietl and Gagsch estimate the original stock in the area of today's rural district to be around 200. However, some of them are likely to have been made of wood - less expensively. The annual accounts of the community of Tamm from 1781 to 1782, which cite the production of “2 Ruhstätt und -bänk” under “Carpentry”, is an indication of this.

Until the 1970s, these small local monuments were little appreciated. Wherever they were in the way of traffic or agriculture, they were removed as annoying obstacles, for example when consolidating land, building roads or building houses. The accelerated weathering of the sandstone in the 20th century also contributed to the shrinkage, particularly in locations where the ponds were exposed to the effects of road salt.

A rethink began at the beginning of the 1980s, at the same time as and also influenced by the inventory by Wolf, Dietl and Gagsch: The historical value of these rest areas was recognized by the transport connections at the time, which were an integral part of living conditions until the second half of the 19th century Century were. Work had already begun on restoring old graves. In some cases, they have also been relocated to locations where they were less endangered than at the original location. New grounds were also built. They were preferably erected in locations where there was or is presumed to have been a historic monument; in some cases simply at locations with prominent locations. These new pits consist of sawn and machined sandstone blocks.

Since grooves were used to set down loads, the fall surface is usually at stomach to chest height, around 1.20 m – 1.30 m above the ground. Every now and then you come across greens that are lower and look more like a bench. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the Gruhen sank due to their weight or that earth was washed ashore. On the other hand, it is due to a lack of knowledge that Gruhen were dug too deep when moving or rebuilding.

Individual representations

The structure is based on the municipalities and within the municipalities according to districts. Due to this system, the headings are repeated in individual cases.

In addition, the path used to lead to a vineyard location.
Simple, one-piece, probably very old designs. The stones are pointed and flattened, in a few places you can still see edge chipping. The pillar and lintel are connected at the front with cranked iron bands. The Gruhe was almost forgotten, overgrown and surrounded by rubble until 1982, until it was released at Reinhard Wolf's initiative.

Simple one-part plans. The various open anchor holes on the lintel and pillars indicate that the Gruhe was implemented several times. Further indentations on the lintel suggest that it originally served a different purpose. The stones are badly weathered and splintered. They are pointed, flattened and provided with an edge flap.

Right pillar on the main part with remains of a clamp, according to Wolf not original. Spacious cement filling between the main part and the bench. The pillars on the main part are only scratched in places. Based on the processing and the location, Wolf, Dietl and Gagsch suspect that it is not an original Gruhe, but a newer work.

Four-section frame with a two-section main section and two bench seats; the largest in the Ludwigsburg district. The Gruhe, probably built in 1808, originally stood around 700 m further northeast at the highest point of the Freiberg – Benningen road . In the end, at the old point of view, the heavy system had sunk in so much that the seats were almost at ground level and the pillars of the benches were no longer visible. After the suspected previous quarry was broken off, the parts were stored for a long time with a farmer. Tape holes on the lintel and pillars that are unrelated to each other, a large square vertical hole in the right part of the lintel and the use of plenty of cement mortar indicate several conversions and suggest that the parts were previously used for different purposes. The lintel was probably placed upside down during the reconstruction, as the underside was made smooth, while the upper side was only roughly pointed. The bench consists of an old door arch with the engraved characters 17 CH 13.

Nowadays this is by no means grassy, but a concrete dirt road. It leads from Poppenweiler to Lemberg and used to be part of the connection between Poppenweiler andAffalterbach. The Gruhe lies on a hilltop; the location offers a wide panoramic view over the lowlands to theHohenasperg, the villages of Poppenweiler andHochdorfand up to the Lemberg.
Simple one-part plans. It was vandalized in 1977 and rebuilt in 1978. The lintel is chamfered at different depths at the bottom on the front and back. The pillar stones also have such chamfers on the inside. All stones are pointed and provided with a chipped edge; the top of the lintel is noticeably uneven and only roughly pointed. Due to the uniform, unusual processing, Wolf suspects that all three stones come from a workshop and that the damaged pit was completely replaced. A curbstone, half buried on the corner in front of the Gruhe, reveals the remains of a scratching. It could be the pillar of a former bench.

The Gruhe originally had a bench on the left. After 1984 it was renovated and the dilapidated lintel was replaced. The engraving EZ92 on the underside of the lintel suggests that this happened in 1992. The left of the two bright, high pillars was repositioned the wrong way around during the renovation, with the tap hole of the former bench connection facing forward. Both the lintel and the pillar are pointed and scraped, and the lintel is also beveled all around the lower edge. The conspicuous rounding of the pillar edges could have resulted from the fact that scythes were ground on the piers.

The upper edge of the lintel has a serrated edge on the back, which is probably not to be interpreted as an ornament, but as damage.

The Gruhe, which was still free in 2010, is heavily overgrown by vegetation in 2020. It is easy to miss from the path if you are not looking specifically for it. From the upper side, which shows the photo from 2009 on the right, it is no longer visible in summer.

Simple one-part plans. With the exception of the underside, the lintel is scraped all around and bevelled at the lower edges. The underside of the lintel is only roughly pointed. Both pillars are also finely chiselled. At the beginning of 2010 the pit is broken, the lintel is behind the pillars. As a result, the large, almost square pegs hewn from the stone are visible, with which the lintel was fixed on the pillars.

In 2020 the Gruhe will continue to appear as a ruin, meanwhile further overgrown with vegetation and rubbish at its feet.

Simple, one-part, low-height, almost like a bench. It was built a few years before 1984 when the vineyards were cleared and is not an original Gruhe. A hulking sandstone cube was placed on two massive pillars with clearly different widths. Its front side was once today's back, because it has a fine grain, while the front and top are uneven and roughly pointed. The left pillar is also only roughly worked, while the right pillar is crowned and provided with a chipped edge.

Höpfigheim

location description image
48.98479 °  N , 9.23909 °  O on the extension of theWolfgasse, which leads out in a north-westerly direction from the place at a crossroads. The path used to be part of theLauffener Weg, the connection fromSteinheimvia Höpfigheim toLauffen.
The dilapidated predecessor was destroyed in a tractor accident in 1981. In the same year a new pit was erected as a replacement from sawn, chiselled sandstone blocks of the same dimensions. Even the year 1830 was carved on the inside of the left pillar in the same style and size as the original. It is not certain whether this year actually indicates the production date of the old Gruhe. The old pillar may also have been a reused component, for example a door lintel.

Tamm

location description image
48.91488 °  N , 9.12657 °  O 800 meters south-east of the old Tammer village, the old connection path between Tamm and Asperg, on the field at a crossroads. The slightly elevated position above the current level of the path offers a view of Hohenasperg. The crown of a largewalnut treehas grown over the Gruhe (as of 2020). This gives the site a picturesque appearance, but would defeat the original purpose of the Gruhe.
Single-part simple tower, built around 1780. The lintel is fixed to the pillars with the help of two diagonally opposite cranked iron straps. It is chipped off on the back and one narrow side. All three stones are only roughly sharpened.

48.93269 °  N , 8.97939 °  O At the Kehlstrasse, the old road connecting Vaihingen accordingOberriexingen, at a crossroads immediately before reaching the plateau.
Historical two-part group with a tapped bench; largely in original condition. The bench and the lintel show damage to corners and edges. The fall is chamfered all around. All stones are scratched; The scratches on the bench and lintel are largely weathered.

Old two-part bridge with a tapped bench; just like the aforementioned one of the most pristine in the region. The bench is broken and is almost at floor level, presumably as a result of earth washing.

Old one-piece low old Gruhe. The fall is chamfered all around; Edges and corners are in surprisingly good condition for an old Gruhe. The lintel and the right pillar are scratched, the left pillar is roughly sharpened.

48.94101 °  N , 8.9799 °  O Onbyway, some 600 meters east of the previously mentioned Gruhe, on Bald, cleared-out, agricultural plateau near a power line, but with good views to Stromberg. The inhospitable impression should be alleviated in a few years by trees planted nearby.
Two-part new pit made of sawn, smooth, light sandstone with a form-fitting interlocking connection to the bench and a beveled lintel. According to the engraved inscription, it was built at the end of the land consolidation in 2009. Before that, there was an old, dilapidated and stylistically renovated Gruhe in the same place; this was removed after 1984.

The stand was certainly different in the past, because in the current position the pit cannot be used.
One-part structure, which is pushed strongly to the left by an ash tree abutting on the right. Both pillars are clearly inclined; between the pillars and the lintel there is a wedge-shaped gap. The lintel is chamfered all around, scratched on the side surfaces and provided with a sloping edge; the surface of the fall is weathered. Corners and edges are largely intact. The pillars are pointed and barred. The left pillar is overgrown with ivy.

Instead of the stairway, a walk in the vineyard. When the area was expanded into a residential area, the site was probably changed and the stairway was created more than a meter lower, so that the Gruhe now stands above the path on the wall and cannot be used.
One-piece old school; the lintel was replaced after 1984. He is beveled all around and scratched throughout. The pillars are pointed and scraped. At the back of the pillars, a concrete wall abuts almost up to the height of the lintel, at the side of the right pillar is a brick wall so that the pit is no longer free.

Old two-part Gruhe with main part and bench, renovated in a style contrary to 1984. The main lintel, a precast concrete part, was replaced after 1984 by a sandstone block that was chiselled and chamfered at the lower edges. The Gruhe was obviously destroyed in 2009 in connection with forest work. The old pillars that have remained standing are horizontally scraped throughout.

In December 2013 the Gruhe was still in ruins. The ruins of the lintel and the bench lying on the ground are now overgrown with moss.

In 2020, the ruins were largely overgrown by vegetation.

According to the engraving on the bench, the two-part rest with a tapped bench was built in 1975. The stones are machine-scratched, somewhat irregularly scalloped and crowned. On the lintel, in a crowned, recessed field, there is a large raised engraving Krugstatt depicting ears of wheat with a bunch of grapes to the left of the inscription and a shoulder bag to the right of the inscription.

Very low bipartite base; the surface of the bench has sunk almost to ground level. The year 1840 was engraved in the old lintel ; however, this fall was lost after 1984 and was replaced. The new lintel bears an inscription and the Enzweihingen coat of arms. The surfaces of the lintel, with the exception of the smooth underside, are scratched. The pillars are pointed and scraped.

From the location you have a beautiful view of the Enz valley, the railway bridge and thePulverdingerHöhe.
Simple one-piece, very low base. The front of the lintel is crowned, all other sides are pointed. Except for the underside, all sides of the lintel have edge impact. In the center of the back of the lintel is a large vertical groove. The pillars are crowned on the back with a fine edge cut, on the front pointed with a coarse edge cut. Inside and outside are pointed and barred. Apparently the stones once had a different use. The back of the pillars was once their front side.

TheRotenbergstrasseleads further into theMettertal, the way west up to the Eselsberg. From the location, theRotenbergstrasse isclearly visible in both directions up to the edge of the village and down to the descent into the Mettertal and the field path on the side is also at least 200 m upwards.
Two-part Gruhe. The mortared tap hole in the left pillar indicates that there used to be a tapped bench. The current small bench was only added after 1984; it does not fit into the main part because of the proportions and the coarse pointed surfaces. The lintel is provided with a bevel, this is only roughly pointed, while the side surfaces are roughly pointed and crowned. The surface of the fall is smooth and weathered in places. Right behind the Gruhe there is an inappropriately placed high post with a signpost and information board.

In the mid-1970s, on the occasion of the vineyard consolidation, two-part pit made of sawn, smooth sandstone. The bench is tapped or dowelled on the right. Ornaments are placed on the back and sides of the lintel; the lintel was probably put on upside down. Slightly rounded edges, fine continuous horizontal crack on the right main pillar.
