geography

Geographical location

With 731 km² of pure land, the district is the smallest district in the Wellington region. With 49,104 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 67.1 inhabitants per km², making it the district with the highest population density in the region.

The western boundary of the Kapiti Coast District is formed by the coastline to the Tasman Sea . In the north borders the Horowhenua District , which already belongs to the Manawatu-Wanganui region. The eastern district boundary is formed by the Carterton District and in a small southeastern section by the South Wairarapa District . In the south lies the urban area of Upper Hutt City and towards the coast there is still part of the border with Porirua City . The island Kapiti Iceland still counts for district.

While a coastal strip consists of flat land, the central and eastern part of the district is in the mountainous regions of the Tararua Range . The district has four cities or small towns with over 1000 inhabitants, Paraparaumu with around 22,000 inhabitants, Raumati with around 7700, Otaki with around 5600 and Paekakariki with around 1750 inhabitants.

climate

The mean daytime temperatures are between 20 ° C and 23 ° C in the coastal regions and down to 17 ° C in the mountains and in winter between 6 ° C and below 0 ° C depending on the altitude. The duration of sunshine is between 1900 hours per year and less than 1700 hours per year in mountain locations. The precipitation is between 1100 mm and 1500 mm in the coastal areas and over 2000 mm per year in the mountains.

history

The district was originally inhabited by the Iwi Muaupoko . They were driven out from 1822 by the Ngāti Toa under the leadership of Te Rauparaha . The first Europeans came to the area from 1833, and when Wellington was founded, the region became more popular with traders and settlers. Under the direction of William Hayward Wakefield , land on the coast was bought from the Māori in 1839 by the New Zealand Company and the first settlements were established. From 1887 to 1896 the railway line was built along the coast, on which from 1906 vacationers from the southern cities came to the coast and between 1900 and 1906 the road along the coast and necessary bridges were completed.

In the 1950s, Paraparaumu Airport was the airport for the capital city of Wellington . From the 1960s onwards, some places were elevated to town status and various councils were formed. These were merged in 1989 as part of the administrative reform and the Kapiti Coast District Council was founded.
