The community is located in Central Burgenland. Parts of the municipality belong to the Landseer Berge nature reserve . The former Pauliberg volcano and its surroundings (Landseer Bucht) have been geologically examined.

Community structure

The municipality includes the following three localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Landsee (283) including Blumau
  • Market Saint Martin (761)
  • Neudorf near Landsee (195)

history

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

During the Roman era, today's Sankt Martin market was in the province of Pannonia .

Like the whole of Burgenland, the place belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21 . From 1898 had to because of the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Sopronszentmárton be used.

After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

In 1931 the community of Schwabenhof , which maintained administrative and parish relationships with Markt Sankt Martin, was incorporated into Neutal despite the rejection of the Neutal municipal council .

The district of Neudorf, which was added later, was first mentioned in 1583 when the inheritance of Johann Csòron (lordship of Kobersdorf) was divided. The first settlers were Croatians, who were later followed by the German population. In 1643 Neudorf was mentioned as a Catholic village. In 1934 Neudorf had 351 Germans and 53 Roma as residents. In 1971 Neudorf lost its independence and became (together with Landsee) a district of the municipality of Markt Sankt Martin. The branch church Neudorf bei Landsee is listed in the Dehio-Handbuch Burgenland (1976) as a "former pilgrimage church to the Scourged Savior".

The market rights of Markt Sankt Martin were confirmed in 1973.
