qualification

72.76 m was not enough for the Spaniard Javier Cienfuegos - here at an award ceremony in Ostrava in 2011 - to take part in the final
With 71.34 m the Finn Henri Liipola clearly missed the qualification for the final
The Dutchman Denzel Comenentia retired with 70.70 m in the qualification

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualifying distance for reaching the final directly was 76.00 m. Since only four throwers exceeded this required distance - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best throwers from both groups to a total of twelve athletes - highlighted in light green. In the end, 73.19 m was enough to make it to the final.

Three throwers started as favorites. The Pole Paweł Fajdek was the world champion of 2015 / 2017 , Vice European Champion in 2016 and European champion in 2016 . The Belarusian Ivan Tsikhan was the world champion of 2003 / 2007 has been repeatedly punished and European Vice Champion of 2016. He was in the past as doping offenders. Wojciech Nowicki, another Pole, was third in the 2015/2017 World Cup, third in the 2016 Olympic Games and third in the European Championship in 2016. The Tajik Olympic champion in 2016 and vice world champion in 2015 Dilschod Nasarov was not among the participants .

The two co-favorites from Poland were ahead after the first round. Fajdek was in the lead with 78.69 m, Nowicki had achieved 77.19 m. The Hungarian Bence Halász followed closely behind with 77.15 m. In lap two Nowicki managed a throw exactly to the 80-meter mark and thus took the lead. With his third attempt Nowicki rose again to 80.12 m. The Norwegian Eivind Henriksen scored 76.86 m in this round. That was a new Norwegian national record and it was fourth. Not much happened in the next round, Nowicki once again confirmed his clear leadership role in this competition with 79.00 m. The penultimate lap brought shifts with it. Halász increased to 77.36 m and thus underpinned his bronze rank. Zichan achieved his greatest distance here with 75.79 m, which meant he was fifth. Hlib Piskunow from Ukraine reached 74.62 m, that was seventh. There was one change in the last round. The Belarusian Pawel Barejscha rose to 77.02 m and finished fourth in front of Eivind Henriksen and Iwan Zichan. But the European champion was Wojciech Nowicki from Poland ahead of his compatriot Paweł Fajdek. Bence Halász surprisingly won the bronze medal.
