The men's 10,000 meter run at the World Athletics Championships in 1993 was held on August 20 and 22, 1993 in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart .

In this competition, the runners from Kenya won two medals, silver and bronze. World champion was the Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie , who celebrated his first successes at world level here at the beginning of a great sports career. Less than a week earlier, Gebrselassie had won the silver medal over 5000 meters . In June of this year he had already won silver over 5000 and bronze over 10,000 meters at the African Championships . Second place went to defending champion Moses Tanui . Bronze went to Richard Chelimo who won silver at the 1992 Olympic Games and 1991 World Championships .

The race was very exciting, on the last two kilometers it was a duel between Gebrselassie and Tanui, which was always in the lead, while the Ethiopian did not take the lead even after slowing down significantly. At the beginning of the last lap, Tanui lost a shoe, but still sprinted decisively and was able to pull away from Gebrselassie a few meters. But this came up again on the home stretch and became world champion. The times for the last four hundred meters were absolutely top class: Gebrselassie 54.98 s / Tanui 55.66 s. After the race, Tanui angrily refused to shake hands with the winner because he felt unfairly pressured. He accused the Ethiopian of constantly stepping on his shoe, which ultimately even led to the loss of his shoes. Objectively, it remains open to what extent Gebrselassie can be assumed to be intentional here.

The African dominance on this longest railway line was not as great as over 5000 meters. As the best non-African, the German Stéphane Franke came fourth. The Italian Francesco Panetta , who was vice world champion over 10,000 meters and world champion over 3000 meters in 1987 , came in sixth.
