The German Athletics Association provided a total of 71 participants at the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu . Of the 75 originally nominated athletes, javelin thrower Till Wöschler , triple jumper Katja Demut , walker André Höhne and 1,500 meter runner Carsten Schlangen had to cancel their participation before the start of the event due to injuries.

Of the twelve German medal winners at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, nine also competed in Daegu. The injured Ariane Friedrich and Verena Sailer and javelin world champion Steffi Nerius , who had ended her career, were missing from this group . Thus Robert Harting was the only defending champion in the German team.
