Lichtenberg is a Saxon municipality in the west of the Bautzen district and belongs to the Pulsnitz administrative community .

geography

Lichtenberg lies between the foothills of the West Lusatian hill country on the edge of the West Lusatia landscape protection area . Framed by three mountains, the Eierberg (353 m), the Steinberg (347 m) and the Eichberg (353 m), the Waldhufendorf extends about 2.5 km along a small stream to the southwest. This, called Lichtenberger Wasser by the inhabitants , still flows into the Kleine Röder on Lichtenberger Flur . There is a connection to the nationwide motorway network via the Pulsnitz junction of the A4 . The closest places in the area are: Leppersdorf , Wachau , Lomnitz, Kleindittmannsdorf, Mittelbach and the cities of Pulsnitz and Großröhrsdorf . The state capital Dresden is about 17 kilometers away.

The first written mention of the place can be found in the year 1350. However, there is some evidence that Lichtenberg is considerably older, more than a thousand years. Bishop Benno von Meißen , it is reported, built the first church in the village as early as 1076. The original center of the village was formed by the upper village on the clear (cleared) mountain with the group of buildings around the church, hereditary court and inn. Lichtenberg is also located on an old connecting road between Pulsnitz and Radeberg that runs through the entire town .

In 1402 the Lichtenberg court received the privileges of an inheritance court from Margrave Wilhelm I and in 1586 the place had about 350 inhabitants. In the course of the 17th century , Lichtenberg was repeatedly plagued by acts of war or plague epidemics. During the Thirty Years' War , Croatian mercenaries shot eight residents on July 28, 1632. In 1633 133 people fell victim to the plague.

A teacher in Lichtenberg is mentioned in the chronicles as early as 1683. The first school building dates back to 1828. In 1849, two bars were approved, the Nieder- and the Obergasthof . The third pub, the Mittelgasthof , followed in 1862.

Since the municipal council election on May 25, 2014 , the 12 seats of the municipal council have been distributed among the individual groups as follows:

• CDU : 9 seats
• LEFT : 3 seats

The neighboring community of Wachau suggested a community merger with Lichtenberg in 2019 . To this end, on 1 September 2019, parallel to the state election in Saxony in 2019 , in both communities referendums been carried out. While the majority of the citizens of Wachau, who were eligible to vote, approved a merger, the citizens of Lichtenberg rejected it. Thus the merger intention initiated by Wachau has failed.

The Lichtenberg Church , visible from afar, is an octagonal central building in the Byzantine - historicizing style with surrounding double wooden galleries and around 1,000 seats. The church was built in 1840/1841 according to plans by Ernst Hermann Arndt by the Lößnitz master builder Christian Gottlieb Ziller . The flat elliptical dome, supported by eight pillars and spanning the church interior , is also architecturally interesting . In the entrance area of ​​the church, the only older tomb that has been preserved is the sandstone grave slab of Pastor Balthasar Rose († 1697).

The partly in half-timbered built rectory dates back to 1756, the last surviving in Umgebindehaus found in the main road no. 80. The mills incurred at the western end of town, the upper or grain mill and Niedermühle were up after 1900 in operation.

A coat of arms has existed for the municipality of Lichtenberg since 1995 . The reason for this was the Saxon municipal code , which requires every municipality to have an official seal. The selection was made on the basis of an imprint of a seal from 1810. The local coat of arms is a so-called "talking coat of arms" and shows a burning, golden candle on a golden mountain with a golden sun above it on a blue shield.
