Predecessor states
Today's federal state of Hesse was created in 1945 from parts of the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau and the People's State of Hesse . Hessen-Nassau emerged in 1866 from the Duchy of Nassau , the Electorate of Hesse , the Principality of Waldeck and Pyrmont , Hesse-Homburg and the Free City of Frankfurt .
