Yamaha Neos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yamaha Neos (official spelling Neo's) is a scooter introduced in 1997 by the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha . The vehicle is identical to the MBK Ovetto . The internal type designation for Yamaha and MBK is YN50 (Neos / Ovetto 50) or YN100 (Neos / Ovetto 100).

The model was positioned by Yamaha as a conservatively designed city scooter and was primarily intended to appeal to older customers. The generally pleasing, slightly nostalgic style with low-lying double headlights, free footwell and slightly stepped bench made the scooter popular right from the start. In addition, it was relatively cheap at an introductory price of DM 3,640  (around 1,860  ).

Model history

In addition to the widely used 50 cm³ version, the Neos was also offered with a more powerful 100 cm³ engine. All engines are manufactured by Minarelli in Italy .

The Neos 100 can be easily distinguished from the 50 cm³ version by the thicker and slightly longer exhaust and the number plate lighting (which can also be retrofitted to the 50 cm³).

In 2008 the second generation of the Neos was presented with a heavily revised look. In addition to a modified frame, the so-called “new Neos” differs through fold-out pillion footrests, a modified helmet compartment and a new, fully digital first-generation speedometer. The changes to the engine were only minor in nature and primarily serve to meet the newer ( Euro 3 emissions standard ).

For the 2009 model year, Yamaha introduced a version with a four-stroke engine. This variant is currently being offered in parallel with the two-stroke engine and is hardly any different in appearance. Technical differences are limited to the engine and a warning display for the oil pressure (instead of the oil level warning for two-stroke engines). The introductory price for the four-stroke model was € 2,250 higher than the price for the two-stroke model (€ 1,995 for the 2009 model).

General

Despite its basic design as a city vehicle, the Neos is also popular with scooter tourists. The scooter has a good range, 250 km in the mountains are not uncommon, and is considered robust and reliable.

The Neos also achieved a few but also considerable successes in scooter racing. Here it is usually equipped with the water-cooled motor of the Yamaha Aerox sports scooter , as this has considerably more potential for performance increases of all kinds.
